Well, after a hiatus of about 3+ years, I return.
Thanks to New Pig Hunter for alerting me to this discussion.
As I mentioned in my e-mail to NPH, my collecting has had to take a backseat to other pursuits over the last several years. But I still have my collection and add a piece every now and then when whimsy strikes. Lately my 8YO son has expressed interest in it and asks me to show him the knives whenever he's in my 'guy room' (the spare bedroom that my wife has decreed that I keep all my guns, hunting & fishing gear, knives, etc.). Perhaps an up-and-coming collector? He'll get his first knife as soon as he gets his Cub Scout Wood Chip (this year).
Here's the story on the Desert Dagger.
I had been wanting to purchase a DD for some time to add to my collection of double-edged knives. I was on a cruise with my wife for our 10th anniversary up in Alaska when we docked in Juneau. In checking out the shops, I found a small knife store.
The owner told me he was a former assistant cruise director and decided to jump ship to open up a store. The knife shop was the first that came available in his price range. He had owned it for only a couple of weeks and his knife knowledge was pretty limited.
I noticed the DD as I was perusing his wares. I asked him about it but he couldn't provide much information -- it was in inventory when he purchased the shop. He had it priced at something like $140 and I was able to talk him down to $120. I was unsure about the knife, because I'd never seen a SOG with a leather-stacked handle before. I really didn't know if it was a production piece or something someone modified on their own. But I took a flier and bought it.
I've never been much of an investing collector (I've never sold any of my knives), but I wanted to see who got the better deal. That was the reason for my previous post.
As I said to NPH, there must be some sort of fate at work. Today is my 15th anniversary. Too bad there's not a knife shop in my immediate area.
