My Desert Dagger arrived to day...and I have to say I was quite unimpressed. The rubber handle looked tackey with a bit of glue or resin on it. Where the blade joins the hilt, there is grit or something in the gaps. The blade wasn't sharp, it's the only knife I've had that the factory didn't produce a sharper edge than my 40 I do at home - I can sort out the edge on my own, but you would expect it sharp from the factory. Though the real kick in the balls was the sheath. Supposedly Kydex; it is the worst sheath I've ever seen in my life. Honest to God, the plastic they use to make those toy soldiers was of a superiour quality.(I really an not joking on that point) It looked like a sheath they make for those little plastic knives they give to kids to play with. Not only was it badly put together but it seemed as thought it was designed for another knife. The strap that secures the handle had no plastic covering over it so when sheathing knife it caught and twisted on the handle. I really think I would have been better of buying a pentagon with leather sheath , infact I may just decide to do that, and send the DD back or just give up on SOG altogether and buy a Spyderco Morgan, at least you get a decent sheath there.

Out of interest, from the internet forums it seems that the Desert Dagger originally came with a leather sheath. Which begs the question did SOG search round for a company that made sheaths of a similar shape knife, check to see if the DD would be able to fit in it, then bulk buy that companys surplus sheaths, then crudley burn the SOG logo on the back, after which then procced to ship them with new DD to be able to claim that they now had a kydex sheath to increase demand for it? Since it it obvious on the internet that this combination is highly desirable and would generate increased sales as that way you could quickly get this new combo out to meet the market (Kill Bill) without having to go through the lengthy process of designing and creating their own sheath whilst losing buisness. Just a thought!

Adam,

I am sorry to hear you are disappointed with your new DD, and tha it appears to have QC issues.

Have you contacted SOG by phone over this?

Have you sent them pictures?

I'm sure they will make it right. :)

Rob

I have been reading these forums for about 2 years, joined around Dec. of last year and this is the first time I have ever heard of a DD being less than almost perfect right out of the box.
I have even noticed in other areas when the DD is mentioned, it seems to always get rave reviews, on fit and finish, and I have never heard anyone say it was not very sharp out of the box.
I think SOG is one of the best companies in the world, and I know they care about their reputation, and I think they also take a lot of pride in the fact that they make some of the best knives in the world.
The burning of the name SOG, on the sheaths, could be called "crude", but I thought it was a very nice touch, to their already nice sheaths. And I doubt very much they would ever consider buying bulk sheaths from another company, that "might" fit, :D , IMO, SOG does not operate this way.

P.S. Contact SOG, they will make it right. ;)

Yea I did contact them, and they seem to be very helpful/concerned about it so hopefully it will all work out.

P.S - Just because it has never been known for them to produce a bad DD, doesn't mean they never will/have.

Very true, apparently there was a problem with this one, it could also mean they have a good record on production/return problems and try very hard to keep it that way.
Of course we all know, things happen, IMO what separates good companies from "O.K." companies, is just how hard they try to fix a mistake or problem, I have read some horror stories about a few companies, not returning emails, not answering phone calls, ect.
Thank goodness SOG in one of the good ones.

When I recieved my Field knife it was not sharp one edge was ground to 22 1/2 degrees the other to well over 25. It took me many hours of hand grinding to get the razor edge the knife can hold. This is the first time I've ever had a knife sent with an edge less than I can achieve.
I've tried 2 sheaths the friction fit does not work and the Kydex lining on both sheaths caught on the knife handle and tore.

SOG's response a) it is unusual to have such a large variation in grind
b) suggest you visit a custom sheath maker.
I'm really disappointed as the knife (once I sorted it) is great

I decided to return it as they couldn't provide me with decent sheath. Shame as the actual knife is beautiful, but no-way worth the price tag, £70 at the most! I also need the money for my Trip to Russia this summer :)

Though after trip I'm gonna save up some cash and get a scuba knife, at least they have good keydex sheaths!
