Anyone own this particular knife? If so, how does if perform? I'm curious, this may be my next knife purchase. Looks very good. Is this knife waterproof? I heard SOG's are..

Any other value SOG's out there?

It's a Chinese SOG. If you want it, go for it. As for the waterproof thing, meh. Any knife is waterproof if you clean out the salt and keep it dry. If you are really worried about seawater resistance, go with some of spyderco's options in H1.

I'm not a huge fan of SOG. I think their fixed blades are really nice (if a tad overpriced), but their folders don't do anything for me. Some are cool, some are crap.

I'm sorry if I come across as a bit of a SOG hater. The only folder of theirs I've actually handled and liked was the Flash II Tanto. It seemed like a fairly solid little knife, a bit like a Griptillian.

i really like the seatbelt/rope cutter on it. i could use it for quite a few different reasons.

If you like it, go for it. I've found any reason for its inclusion other than looking cool. If I'm in a situation where I need to rapidly cut rope or a seatbelt, I'd rather have more cutting area than relying on one portion of the edge.

Ghost3, I recently got an Escape. Haven't had a chance to do anything serious with it. I haven't used the seat belt cutter.

It is a very solidly built folder. Tight when I first got it, it loosened up with some working the blade. Great sharp edge, serrations don't bind. I've got a big hand and it fits nicely. The glass-breaker is a 4-sided pyramid off the backspacer, which very comfortably doesn't jab the heel of my hand when I palm it. I like the clip, it's the best I've seen on a SOG. It isn't hard to clip to a pocket and it holds very well. It is low-profile so it doesn't interfere with my grip.

I like it, I've been carrying it.

what would be a similar knife and similar price that's perhaps better quality?

That's kind of a hard question to answer, simply because there are so many solid folders in that price range. For the money, it's really hard to beat the Ontario RAT-1 or RAT-2. The Ontario Utilitac seems pretty nice too.

A lot of CRKT's knives are pretty nice, provided you avoid some of the crappier Chinese made models.

As for Chinese manufactured knives, the Spyderco Tenacious family offers alot of blade for the money. Kershaw has some pretty good Chi-Com made stuff too.

If you want an American made knife, a Buck Vantage can be bought for around $30. The Kershaw Skyline has a pretty good reputation and sells for around $45.
