I'm lookin for a cheap replacement for my Cold Steel hawks that basically failed me via the 3mm self set screw that either falls out or breaks after several throws. I've been looking at the SOG Fusion Fast Hawk on youtube. Anyone have any negative experiences with any of the SOG hawks?

in my opinion as newby as i am, if your just throwing, simply take the set screw out and throwto your hearts desire. hawks stay on because the top of the haft is wider than the bottom. it stays seated with centrifugal force, axes have been made that way for centuries. also with the cs hawk (idk which one you have) if the haft breaks, you can just cut down branch, shave it down to size and boom new haft, if you break the sog haft youll have to order a new one. bottom line, for simply throwing, stay with the cheap simple wood haft and cs hawk. just my opinion, and its cheaper to just take out the set screw with an allen wrench than to buy a whole new hawk

CS hawk? Pfffttt. Just carve a new handle where the head fits on from the top-down and pound a wedge in that bastard. Who cares about a friction-fit.

i didnt say he needed an exact friction fit, im just saying that fixing the or replacing the haft for the CS would be cheaper and depending on his skill with wood, faster and easier than buy and waiting for a new sog hawk. the sog has screws, the CS has less parts to go wrong.

You're right, of course: different solutions for different skill levels. I wasn't actually alluding to your post, even though it looks like I did. I'm just nuts about doing everything right.

ah true true lol. i just wish someone had told me about to take the set screw out of my CS hawk before i took it out for a throw the first time. that set screw chewed into my haft pretty hard core :(

I no longer like the CS Hawks. Yes I've used them for quite awhile with out the set screws but I'd still prefer a solid head on my ax. I am not a fan of SOG knives but I'd like to see how the FastHawk fairs at throwing and chopping.

its combat axe, built for speed in confrontation, i dont see it being great at splitting and that spike in the back of the head would make it harder to baton if needed. as for throwing, its more screws and more peices that can break under the tremendous force and stress of repetative throws. now im not saying it cant do these things, im just saying unless you intend to get into confrontations with it, id stick with the simpler two peice haft and head hawks. just my opinion

Maybe try something like a Fort Turner Norse hawk? The long edge and pointy tips make for a great thrower. He makes them from 1020 steel with a hardened bit of 1095. You can also have him make it with a hammer poll. Makes a great tools and thrower/weapon.
