SOG Field Pup question/thoughts?

Hey all - posted this in general knife discussion, but only got one response...figured this forum may generate more responses.

So I'm considering picking up a SOG Field Pup (NOT Seal Pup...don't want serrations) from Walmart. My biggest reasons for this are 1.) I've got $15 in Walmart gift cards, and 2.) I've read more than a few pretty good reviews/opinions about the knife, especially for a general use camp/utility blade with decent steel (which would be it's intended use...survival as well if it really came to it, but I've got a Benchmade Rant for that). Also the sheath seems to be really good for the money. With the gift cards I'd be able to grab it online for $15 essentially.

Any thoughts on this blade from anyone, especially from those who've used it? My only hesitation is the slight recurve...is that gonna prove to be a pain in the arse to sharpen when the time comes? Didn't really think about it until I read an earlier post here that mentioned that as a concern. If not the Field Pup, any recommendations for what to use the gift cards toward that is currently offered on Walmart's website (SOG or other)? I'm more in the market for a fixed blade, but was also considering the Kershaw Skyline or SOG Flash (1 vs 2 I don't know) if I go the folder route (my current user is a Kershaw Whirlwind assisted-opening and Leatherman Charge AL).

At this point I'm pretty much sold on the Field Pup so long as the recurve won't really be a nightmare for sharpening...if you couldn't tell haha.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Beestokk,
I don't have the Field Pup but I can tell you that sharpening a recurve is not hard. I use a ceramic rod sharpener, the kind that you stick the rod in the wood block and its set for 20 or 25 degrees. I sharpen my Vulcan and Tomcat (they both have recurves) this way. Those sharpeners are pretty common at sporting goods stores. Anyway, sharpen your Field Pup with one of those or Spyderco's Sharpmaker and it should be a breeze.

Sort of a late reply, sorry....I just picked up 2 Field Pups on Amazon. Price for each was $30 even, no tax and free shipping. I don't know if they are being discontinued or what, but they seem to be sale priced in a lot of places.
So I grabbed one for myself and one for my grandson.

They are a sweet little fixed blade, whatever your opinion of AUS8, and they arrived quite sharp out of the box. A great companion knife or just the right size to complement a big heavy survival knife like a RAT or RANGER, etc.

No problem! Better late than never...I appreciate the input! Yea, the price seems too good to pass up. It sounds like your intended use (companion knife or complementary knife) is the same as mine. Any thoughts on sharpening that slight recurve? Doesn't seem like it should be much of an issue from the few replies I received. I'm just inexperienced when it comes to sharpening but considering the Sharpmaker or Lansky system since I've heard good things about both (probably leaning toward the former). Thanks again!

In the price range, I think they are an excellent knife for general use. I like a thin blade for hunting chores. They are one of the Christmas presents that I sometimes select for folks. As far as I'm concerned, the biggest negative on the knife is the sheath. I would rather have a simple nylon sheath over the one that is provided with the knife.
