Hi,
I have a problem with the thumb on my strong hand (non functional MP joint) and need to start carrying an assisted opening knife. It has started becoming too fiddly to open any of my Spydercos.

Digging in my collection I found both of the knives mentioned above, bought 10 or so years ago but never carried. The SOG is the Flash II FSA5 Tiger Stripe , CRKT is the plain edge stainless blade.

These are 10 years old, is there any other better AO technology I should be looking at or should I just go ahead an get these dirty?
I EDC mainly a delica sized Spyderco.

Thanks

I prefer Kershaw's AO to the SOGs I've owned; I've never owned a CRKT, so I can't compare there. You might also look at ZT, which has some well-regarded AOs in their line-up.

Other than "good AO," what are you looking for in an EDC knife?

I like my Flash 2 and still carry it from time to time, even though my tastes have progressed to more expensive offerings. With a bum thumb, it might be pretty hard to work the thumb stud and the lock release.

Lots of Kirshaw and ZT assisted knives use a flipper tab that you actuate with your index finger. I'm guessing that would be easier for you. Ideally you would use your thumb to disengage the lockbar, but on some knives you can reach under the blade with your index finger to do it.

Many thanks for the replies.
My thumb works OK, it's the joint second down from the tip of the thumb that's smashed so small motor stuff is a bit difficult.
I am able to activate both of the knives mentioned above OK.
Whats do I want in an EDC knife?
I have pretty much carried a Delica for many years alternating now and again with a para military, military and others in the range.
Not a day goes by without me opening it for something or another.
In another world, due to necessity I used to EDC a firearm for many years, the knife Spyderco Civilian or suchlike was for backup. I no longer feel the need to do this but it's nice to know I at least have something in my pocket that can be brought into action if needed.

I will look at the ZT and Kershaw offerings as well.

My neighbor recently picked up a Kershaw flipper. I think it is a Link. I know the name starts with the letter L.

Great knife for the money. About 45-50 dollars. We sat around at lunch and compared it to my Benchmade Volli. The Volli offers better materials but, I hate to admit, the Kershaw is the better buy, IMHO.

Consider Kershaw's offerings.

If flippers appeal to you, that mitigates the need for your thumb entirely. Kershaw has some good flippers, all AO, in a variety of price ranges. Lots of flippers in the ZT line, albeit more expensive ones.

Check out the Kershaw Knockout and the ZT0562, 0450, and 0350.

Kershaw Knockout, flipper & thumb studs.....still use thumb to unlock.
Kershaw Link, HOB has an exclusive with s35vn and it's a winner!!
Both great knives that are inexpensive!
Joe

There are better knives and there are worse knives, but if the best knife is the one you have with you why not just use those two? If they don't work out for you, look for another.

Thanks all.
TLE indeed, wise words.
I have just slipped the Flash II into my pocket. So far working well.
