I recently had an opportunity to purchase a SOG Flash II First Edition /048 in Rainbow Aluminum handles.
It's near mint, but no box or papers.
I am trying to find out more info on this blade.
Is there any available?
Some of the things I noted was the weight. The Zytel handled version is 3.3 oz. I just weighed this one on my digital food scale and it weighed in a 4.1oz. Not bad.
From what I have read, it should be a little heavier for the aluminum handles, so I don't get that one.
The lockup is VERY tight, and it opens smooth and fast. Blade has the combo edge.
It's rainbow from tip of blade to end of pocket clip.
It is #48 in the series.
And that is the extent of what I know.
Any help would be appreciated.
I have 2 flash I's and an Aegis. And MANY other folders and fixed blades.
This one, I just can't find any info. I THINK it was made in 2006, but I just don't know.
TIA

I am just going to kick this one up to the top. Hopefully someone will have an answer.

Trying to remember exact info here.

I think there were 500 pieces of these that we did about 5 years ago. Other than the coating the knives are the same as the regular aluminum Flash II models. If you want more specific info let me know and I'll dig it up.

Thank you Chris
That 500 # is one thing I was wondering about.
I guess my questions are mainly
Why was there a first edition in Rainbow. What significance is that?
Is it a first RUN of the knife, or like a prototype?
Mine has the rectangular blade lock, when did it go to the round button, and what is the difference between the rectangular lock system and the newest locking system.
If you get time, I would like to see any specific info on this blade. It seems to be an interesting collectible, but I am sorely tempted to carry it when I can carry a larger folder. Any reason not to?
thanx

In advanced, sorry for the lack of specific info on this but my memory is a little faded.

We numbered the first 500 of these and then continued to make more after that. You got one of the first 500 of that knife made. So yes it was the first run of these not a prototype.

On the rectangular lock, we switched about 3 years ago to the new Arc-Actuator lock. WE took this from the Trident folding knives that came out after the Flash II. It is sort of an improvement on the original design of the lock. It makes it easier the release the blade. Other than that the mechanisms are very close.

Specifics on the blade are the same as the current Flash II
AUS-8 Stainless steel
Rc. 57-58
The coating is a rainbow TiNi, similar to our black TiNi just a rainbow color instead of the black.

I see no reason not to carry and use this knife. It is fully functional and is pretty interesting looking as well. If you are one to collect knives this might have some potential value.

Hope this helps
