SOG Folding Trident Elite - not what I was expecting

I recently bought (and unfortunately returned) a SOG Folding Trident Elite at a local sporting goods store. I had extremely high hopes as I analyzed the Trident Elite through the clam pack and imagined how awesome it would be with it's new updates.

I owned several variations of the original Trident folder and found the addition of a glass breaker, newer pocket clip design, full thickness through the tip, and rubber inserts sounded great....until I took it home and opened it.

I don't want to be all negative about this knife so I'll start with some pros and cons:

Pros:

Blade - the blade holds it's thickness all the way to the tip. This was only possible on the original trident folder if you stuck with the tanto version, otherwise the clip point was very thin almost the full length of the blade. In addition to the thickness the satin finish doesn't hold finger prints as much as the original satin / mirror finish of the original trident folder.

Handle - Rubber inserts adds to the grip and fills the hand nice, almost same general shape of the original. Glass breaker is a nice addition and is set on the handle where the blade is at when opened. So when the blade is closed you have a nice carbide tip sticking out where the blade was.

Cons:

Blade - The "jimping" on the spine goes too far forward and is actually thinner than the rest of the spine making it work against itself. I wasn't sure if it was intended as a miniature saw back or just a tapered down version of jimping. The recurve I could live with but would have liked to see the original straight edge version holding out.

Handle - Although I sort of like the look I think some weight could have been shaved off by not including the metal bands on either end of the knife. The original trident looked great as a flat black and didn't need them. As before when stuffing the trident (new and older version) the safety hook cutout likes to jump on the edge of your pocket and has to be worked in place.

Pocket Clip - Although I liked the look of the pocket clip there is a slap of rubber underneath the entire length of the pocket clip that makes inserting and pulling out the trident elite almost impossible with two hands!!! This was the deal breaker for me. I liked the rest of the knife with minor nit picks but the pocket clip and the slab of rubber underneath it made it impossible and impracticable for me to use on a daily basis and especially on patrol.

Perhaps this could be fixed in the future but for now the rubber under the pocket clip turned me off from the knife and made me return it. I didn't want a near $80 paperweight due to the pocket clip causing me to not carry the trident elite.

I can't blame you at all for returning it.

I have to agree with you on not liking the blade slot/cut-out in the handle.

It really annoys me when going to clip it back in the pocket!

(I have the original version.)

I was never a fan of the original trident folder. The handle just seems off to me. Sort of big and goofy. The cut out for cord is an absolute deal breaker. For SOG sat folders I will stick to the flash and aegis.
