The image below is the SOG Bowie II Russian version. As you can see it has no guard and has an R on the choil. Does anybody know why a Russian version would not have a guard?

Most traditional European knives don't have guards on them? My best guess, only the "kids" knives usually have guards.

Maybe they consider the knife with a guard a tactical type that they won't allow importation of?

I think there is a law in Russia that does not allow fixed blades to have a guard, therefore most of the russian knives except military ones are so close to finlands FBs.

Not 100% sure on the above, though. The best way would be anyone from Russia /or region/ to confirm, or deny.

Some quick googling turned up this:

anything that is a knife that is under 9cm , that can be any bladed ool , dagger, ect ect.
or that is over 9cm, but with only a single edge , or a secound edge only for 35% of the blade. this can be any thickness, but must not a have a guard over 5mm wide...
next is knives under 2.5mm they can have a gaurd , can be double edged,, ect ect , but must be thin..
Kinda hard to decipher what he's saying, but I gather that a larger knife can only have a minimal guard unless he has a permit to carry it, or has a hunting license (and presumably, is hunting while carrying it). No idea of the reasons for all these restrictions, but confusing and pointless knife laws are hardly exclusive to Russia.

Russian knife laws are f.cked up. Basically they divide knives into 3 categories:

1) Knives with "free" circulation
2) Hunting knives (knives are numbered and registered in your firearm license. those can't be edc-d)
3) Military knives (officially prohibited for "regular folks")

First 2 categories have well defined standards(there are a lot of them) - shape of the handle, blade shape, hardness and thickness, tip angle, etc... But, as the russian joke states: the rigidity of russian law usually compensated by optional compliance with the said law :D

I actually like that russian version.
Yeah, my russian internet friend said that his father had licence for his hunting knife. I couldn't believe it, but it's true. It's some damn weird law.

A:
Russians are so hardcore, they dont need a hilt.

B:
Russians are so poor, they cant afford a hilt.

C:
SOG hates the Russkies, so they want to hurt them bad.

D:
Pussy westerners, we vodka-drinking-steel-eating-surviving-a-nuke-with-a-smile-Russians KNOW how to use a knife...Sissys.

Hahaha, well put. :D

In America, you put guard in knife.

In Soviet Russia, guard put knife in you.

does that "R" stands for rejected?
sure is scary proposition, with sog knives being made razor sharp most of the time.
pity about having such a wide sheath now...
