Update,
Well thanks to Chris and the folks at SOG, I now have a plain edge Force in my hands.
The knife itself, without the combo edge is much more to my liking. The new sheath that it came with, while snug, is no where near as tight as the first one. This will be a user for me as are most of my knives. It will serve as a heavy use camp knife and will be expected to perform all manner of outdoor camping and hiking tasks. From slicing meat and veggies to making tarp stakes and batoning kindling and small wood. If things go well, and I think they will. It will get strapped to my main "Go Bag"
My thanks go out to Chris and Sog for turning around a frustrating situation in very short order. Their swift and professional approach, gives me hope that SOG is indeed trying to do it right. The issues were identified, and solutions to my problems were created. I now have the correct knife, that I originally ordered. I have regained my initial excitement about it.
Testing and reviewing will start today as it's raining and snowing at the moment and i have a short six mile woods jaunt planned. My normal A2 knife in it's leather sheath will get to remain warm and dry by the wood stove as the new Force with it AUS 8 steel and nylon sheath get to go play in the weather.
A final note. Customer Service is at least as important, if not more important than the product itself in the successful operation of any company. I feel Chris and SOG really stepped up to the plate to take care of a very low profile, run of the mill customer here. And for that they have earned my respect and most likely, more of my business.
I plan on starting an separate review thread for the Force. That will specifically focus on the knife and it's use.
Thanks again Chris and SOG!!!
Well this did not go well.
Knives arrived, I ordered both a Northwest Ranger and a Force. To say I was excited would be an understatement. I really want to be a Sog guy again.
I opened the Northwest Ranger first. First thing I find is the Lanyard hole bushing in the handle is set too deep on the right side and the sticks out on the left side, leaving a sharp edge to catch on things. Mainly my finger. Next is the sheath, It looks cheap, because it is. But it works. And many knives today don't even come with a sheath right? I guess you get what you pay for.
Next up is the Force. I really had high hopes for this knife, and to a certain extent still do. I open it up and it's the Serrated Version. I ordered the Plain Version. Not Sog's fault. On the phone to the dealer, they are sending a return ticket, and I ordered another one on the spot to try and get the plain version. Charged to me of course.
I like the heft of the knife. It has good size and feels good in the hand. The Balance is almost perfect for me. It looks to be a good all around style for a camp/utility work. And I would not doubt it as a self defense piece either. So I thought maybe I'd keep it. Maybe throw it in the wife's Bug Out Bag.
I look the sheath over and try sliding the knife in. It literally took me both hands pushing toward each other to get the knife in the sheath. Not the end of the world I think. So I look to see if I can remove the plastic insert inside the sheath to do the hot water trick only to find it riveted at the bottom with no way of getting it out. Maybe it will loosen up, but I have to believe it will raise he$$ with the finish on the knife (not a huge deal as this will be a user). So I try and pull it out and again it's a strenuous operation. Two hands with much effort.
I'm not really trying to gripe here, I wanted to love this knife as much as I do my older Sogs. But man, I have had a knife on my belt since I was five years old. I'm fifty-two now and can't believe companies can't build a decent sheath anymore. Or at least one that doesn't suck. I own close to two hundred knives Busses, Barkies, Ka-Bars, Beckers, Fallknivens, and Chris Reeves, just to name a few. So I'm not a newb when it comes to knives. The Becker sheaths are nothing to write home about either, but at least I can get the knife in and out of them.
Overall not a good morning. Maybe next week when the Plain Version arrives I'll see things in a better light. But right now I'm sitting on $182.00 worth of stuff I wish I hadn't bought, with another $113.00 worth on the way to try and make it right.
Does anyone know if the entire sheath can be boiled without causing bad things to occur?
Sadly, I think this is the first time I have really complained about a knife on this site. I would get behind SOG or any company or for that matter that takes the time to do it right. I have many older Sogs like a Seki Pentagon, Seki Seal Pup, and some older bowies. So I know they can build sheaths if they want to. Even the Sog Government I just picked up used, has a nice Sheath. What happened?
Chris, Sorry for the rant but you need to hear this stuff.
