SOG fun with their non-warranty

On March 3,2009 I ordered an SOG access Card (SOGAC77) With the black finish. The design is good and the weight is very nice. BUT, when I cut two small cardboard boxes the nice black coating wore off the tip and the whole blade was scratched to the point I sent in back to SOG warranty. This was on 3-13-2009. Then the fun began. I received a call from SOG warranty and spoke to a rude and exasperating woman who knows nothing of cutlery. In my letter accompaning the knife I stated I had owned the knife for seven days and after using I had used a Spyderco ceramic tri-angle rod to touch up the blade as it was quite dull. The nice lady told me I had owned the knife much longer than seven days and had used it much more than to cut two boxes and since I had used a ceramic thing it voided the warranty. I stated she should look at the date on the enclosed invoice and if she could add she would find out my ownership claim was accurate and the ceramic was used on the cutting edge only. She stated she DID NOT BELIEVE ME AT ALL. I ended the call with profanities and hung up. I sent a nasty e-mail and called SOG to speak to a manager. He was pleasant & said he would look in to it. His e-mail reply stated he did "heavy cutting tests"with the knife but didn't damage the coating during his "heavy test". I happen to have been born at night but it wasn't last night. This was like being called a liar by the second Sog employee.
I will never allow another SOG piece of shit product in my home again. When he sends me the new AC77 i will give it to me son who will abuse it and lose it. A fitting end since I can't FLUSH it like it deserves.
BEWARE THIS COMPANY!!!
Enjoy your SOG knives

In my previous post I stated the manager said heavy testing , but his words were rough testing. Just to clarify.

Wierd ,I sent an email to Sogs warranty department a few months ago telling them how I had broken the pocket clip on my flash2 and explained how the broken clip was pretty much my fault and they sent me a quick reply asking my address so they could send me a new clip .All communication was pleasent and fast I dearly hope this isn`t the way things are headed with SOG.

Sometimes I feel that SOG should hire people in the Warranty department who live, breathe and talk knives. :grumpy: The "Woman at the Warranty Department" may well be 'Lindsay', whom I sent my 2 knives in to. :o

I'll admit that she isn't the best person who knows what is wrong with the knife - she is more on the Customer Service sector side. What I did was to ask her to ask the guys from the engineering department (those who actually work on knives sent in for warranty) what can be done on the knife.

It takes some probbing, persistance on your part and some insistance that the knife can be fixed. If you are rude, demand for a knife to be repaired or abuse the staff nothing will work for you; just imagine you are on the other end of the line.

Both times when I sent my knives in I sent my request politely and responded cheerfully. The result sent in a parcel is something that didn't disappoint me either. ;)

I don't understand, what's your complaint? Are you saying that the TiNi coating is defective and want another knife? Or is it the sharpness your complaining about? I'm not a coating expert but I've seen many knives that the "BLACK" has worn off or been scratched. That's why I get SATIN or polished and it still shows if you USE your knife.

Enlighten me. Honey always works better than venom for me.

BTW, I just noticed they are sending you a NEW ONE?

The coating , in my opinion since it wore off and left bare metal after minimum use , is defective. Also after cutting 20 0r 30 slices of cardboard I thought the knife would hold an edge , but it was very dull. As to honey or venom it was SOG that spread the venom. But I have only collected knives for 30 years so I don't claim to know it all. The post was to tell my fellow users of knives my recent experiences. Take it at face value as I will post no more on this subject.

I have the Black Access Card. I've used and carried it. I like it.
I haven't noticed any premature wear of the coating. I also wouldn't care very much if the coating wore off quickly.

read the warranty literature that came with the knife, it clearly states the coating wear is 'normal' and is not covered. If you don't like SOG fine thats your prerogative. I have had nothing but good experiences and good things to say about SOG. They have a quality product, good service all at an excellent price point.

IMO you used the wrong tool for the job, I don't call 30 slices of cardboard normal or intended use for the access card (or any other small or EDC type knife for that matter), its a hideaway knife to be used when nothing else is available. At $100 I would have expected the coating to last a bit longer, but hey you were warned in advance.

Hey, if they send you a new one you got extremely good customer service after acting like a jerk!

spidyman, did I become a jerk before or after the SOG management apologized to me? as to cutting cardboard why don't you write MSG Kim Breed U.S. Army Special Forces Retired and rail him over using cardboard as a test medium in his monthly articles in Blade magazine? which of my knives should I use to cut cardboard? My knives by Moran, Lile, Henry ,Fisks, Cronk, Loveless, Crain, Gilbreath, or Appleby? As to the $100 cost the Randall # 1 I carried on 3 tours in Nam only cost $43. I suppose its no good either. The only jerk is one who runs his mouth with no first hand knowledge.

i own a sog seal pup elite and a tech bowie and havent had any problems with them as of yet.

but the cardboard thing is where i gotta comment. i've worked in a warehouse for the past 3 years where i've gone through boat loads of cardboard, tape, zapstraps (zipties?), bailing wire, and all sorts of plastic. i would expect a knife that is a hundred dollars to be able to perform all these tasks. infact the knife performed these tasks was under 100 dollars (endura IV).

i dont own any of the sog folders or multitools. but i gotta say their fixed blades are quite nice in both fit and finish.

sorry to hear you've had such a bad experience blademan.

@spidy: i gotta ask, you state that the access card is a hideaway knife to be used when nothing else is available. but isnt that the purpose of an edc? the way i see the access card is for use as a discrete edc which is small enough to be carried, say... in your wallet? whether or not he was cutting 3 slices or 300 slices of cardboard, i would expect the knife to perform fairly reasonably for a 100 dollars. maybe it wont cut like a lazer but it should still be able to reasonably slice. but maybe i'm expecting too much from my folders.

@mods: i think this thread should be in feedback instead of the sog forum. just my thought.

edit:

i dont think having a new knife sent to him after "acting like a jerk" is necessarily a sign of good customer service. IMO, even if the person on the other end told me in a polite manner that "no the knife coating wear is not covered by our warranty" and told me that they are sending me back my knife in the same condition it was sent to them i would be ok with it. heck, being polite is just as important in customer service if not more important than replacing blades, IMO.

By your own description BEFORE, you said " I ended the call with profanities and hung up. I sent a nasty e-mail and called SOG to speak to a manager."

Insults will get you nowhere fast, that may very well be your problem, we all have our own expectations and when things or persons don't measure up to OUR expectations its what we do or say next that defines us as mature or a jerk or whatever.

If you would have read my entire post you would have realized that I did say that I would have expeced the coating to last longer than it did for the price one pays.

Mods move this to GB&U

Generally speaking, this is the sort of thread for FEEDBACK/GBU, but it's also appropriate to a specific manufacturer's forum.

I'm not knocking your many years of collecting blades, but cardboard is pulped wood with clay mixed in as a binding agent. Cutting cardboard is like running the knife edge over a cinderblock......very abrasive.

just saying :foot:

i always wondered why cold steel does those cardboard test cuts in their videos. ;)

I dont like Sog's CS as much as others.. But they have always taken care of me.. Not perfectly.. But at least it got done.. But I do avoid there products for other reasons too. Good luck..
By the way.. Chris@Sog.. Has always been very helpful for me..

blademan 11 , I had a bad experience with my SOG goverment agent, the sheath never was satsfactory, the belt snaps won't stay closed and the sheath has no tension to it. I need a sheath and I was told to go find one, they would not replace the sheath.
