I just didn't want to do a thread necromancy even though I read the thread.

I was just was wondering if they were still worth getting, (like if they changed how they built them or anything.).

I'm not fond of the sheath though, but still...

So, are they any good? (something to throw in my pack and occasionally use)

Cheap and have a good weight. The handles are bit slippery and I will be trying out a fellow forumite's idea of putting o-rings on them.

Bit worried about the steel (420 HC I think) but I reprifiled the angle of my hawk and the edge hasn't rolled... yet :)

Try it out, it's actually so cheap that you won't feel bad when you hit a nail or other hurtful stuff. I'll be trying to get the Lagana Vietnam hawk and I hope it's better than the SOG.

PS: The old SOG fusion hawks had wooden handles, the new handles are more durable but has some flex to it. And the sheath ain't bad considering it came with the hawk, it's lasted me this long :)

A Marine friend of mine carried one in his many tours of Iraq and loves it. He abuses the hell out of it (edges probably look terrible), but it has worked for him thus far. Makes me want to consider one (although, I really have no need for one).

Thanks for that, I have been umming and ahhing over getting one. In effect it is the only one available and I need one for travel and emergencies, to slip behind the seat of my pick up.

I have a Cold Steel tomohawk and love it. Not sure about the SOG tomohawk. I was thinking about getting it as well but I'm just not sure about the 420 stainless steel part. 420 is a very soft steel and any knife made out of it is pretty much worthless. But for a tomohawk 420 might be a bit different.

i bought one i stuck it 3 times and the handle crack so i stick with ft there built alot better

i dont have one, but there was a long article written by Clint Thomson in the Dec '07 issue of Knives Illistrated, pg 50about the Fusion Tomahawk. Apparently he is or was active military and SOG gave some to him to give to soldiers on the front lines in the Middle East.

They reported back that it was a good hawk to use with only one major problem; the wood handles broke under heavy useage. SOG then re-made the hawk with a fiberglass re-enforced handle.

I have not seen any of these new ones on the market but they could possibly be ordered from the company?? the new ones are all black, handle and head. the old ones are green handle w/ black head and black grip.

heck, i wouldnt mind getting one. -- Eric

The new one still suck ass. My buddy bought one and it snaped off the head on the first throw, waste of money.

now he welded a steel handle to it and we call it the retard ax because ANYONE can make it stick.

I have one that I have been using as a backpack axe. Sharpens up very nicely and is great making kindling for the fire. My son used it to whittle a walking stick this weekend. All around a very nice axe. Where it comes up short is that it's a combat axe and not a camp axe, so it's not too useful when pounding in tent stakes. It's also a little heavy for a backpack although it looks good along side of my Glock entrenching tool on the pack.

I prefer it as a fighter in the classical sense because of the head design where it flows into the handle. Great blade on handle protection when trapping. As compared to the VTAC:

I've got two of the SOG Fusion 'hawks. They are a good value. If you need a hawk for some serious smashing then get an ATC Vietnam tomahawk or one of the big dollar models. Wyatt Earp didn't bring a .22 to the O.K. Corral

I have a fusion tomahawk. At first I was very impressed: it cut very well, seemed durable, etc. After a month of use the handle cracked!(It was the newer fiberglass handle). So now I just stick with my cold steel tomahawk.

Is there anything the SOG can do that my Fiskars 600 can't? The difference in length is <2" or 4cm.
I must say it looks quite tempting. The handle protection looks like it makes sense.

They look pretty similar to me, I liked my SOG, but the handle breaking ruined my good feelings. If you get it, don't use it for tough tasks and it should be fine.
