After watching Last of the Mohicans I need a tomahawk. :D

I like the looks of the SOG tomahawk for the price. Does anyone have experience with it? Will it be good for throwing? I only plan on using it for fun like throwing it at trees and stuff, not really chopping or survival.

The fusion should be great for throwing, it's designed like the Lagana vietnam hawk which is a great thrower.

Should never throw at trees though.

From what I have read on the forum here, the fusion doesnt hold up too well. Maybe that has changed. Also check out the American Tomahawk Co VTAC that Kenny H mentioned they can take a beating.
Make a target and save a tree.....

for the money it is not a bad hawk i have one i have thrown many times and it has held up and compared to the other standard ones i think it comes the most sharp from the factory only thing you have to do really is sharpen the spike on it.

The older model with the wooden haft was breakage prone. The current model has a glass filled nylon haft and is much stronger. I have used mine to chop and have had no issues in 3 years. Definitely rework the spike.

i have one, did torture tests on it. let my teen son beat the snot out of it and it came through without a problem! get one, theyre very fun and a great tool to have. --- Eric

I have been looking at this myself. Ty for the replies and topic!

However, after searching it seems going with a CS Riflehawk might be a better choice, not sure. Anyone suggest CS over the SOG? It will be my first hawk and want to make an educated purchase.

I have said this before in other threads, the hawk head from SOG is an outstanding piece! I had a wooden haft that broke with the first chop. I did some modifications and have had no problems since. I hear good things about the FRN upgrades!!!:D

That's a heckuva fine haft mod bro...you should consider selling those! But you'd better first send me one to test...you'll get more money with Q's ZombiesMustDie.com Seal of Approval.

Hello all: Brand new to the forums and completely new to this world.

I am interested in this piece. So, going by an old adage my dad always told me, he recommends only buying tools with steel handles. I'm obviously not going to be cutting down oak trees with this tool.

The responses have been great but can anyone summarize some of the uses of this tool including both practical and recreational.

I am also looking for an entrenching tool but have not searched the forums yet. Just graduated school and moving out and just making a few survival kits and a safe room in my apartment. Car will have screen medium tupperwares: Red full of first aid equipment, Blue for winter and Green for Summer/Spring/Fall. I'd like to add this tool to my SSF kit.

By the same token, I like the movie the Patriot and tomahawks have always fascinated me (best name for a weapon, imho)

Here is something else I've seen:

Thanks to everyone for their time and effort.

allright, i know im late to post on this thread but i have one of the new FRN handled sog hawks... i freaking LOVE this thing the only thing i can gripe about is the grip design is sharp and rips up my hands when i do come actual wood chopping but a quick paracord wrap and some gaffers tape fixed the problem quite nicely my only thing is i guess i want more of a hatchet out of my beloved sog tomahawk hopefully soon i am gonna mod it, i plan to chop off the spike and make a hammer end hopefully it wount throw off the balance and weight too badly and will still be a good chopper/mayhem bringer :) oh and kudos to babakanoosh45 on the mod it looks BEAUTIFUL... if you ever decide to make customs for the hawk and sell em shoot me an email

How good is the heat treat on these, is the edge prone to rolling over or denting or chipping? I was thinking of buying one of these for my dad for Christmas as a self defense weapon, he is a legally blind Marine Corps Vietnam Vet and lives alone. He insists on keeping a Ka-Bar beside his bed just in case since a firearm is out of the question but we both think a tomahawk wold be a safer more effective weapon for him. What do you guys think, would this make a good self defense weapon for him or would the SOG Fast Hawk be a better choice or should he stick with his trusty K-Bar?

the heat treat isnt that great i can sharpen it to hair shaving sharp but the second i start chopping wood that edge goes, i mean it remains sharp but not as sharp as i would like and i havent dented or chipped it yet i dont think chipping will be a problem and the steel is soft enough to file out any dents.(on the blade, the spike on the other hand is INDESTRUCTIBLE ) i think the tomahawk would be a great option for self defense but it does need a little bit of customization the handle design isnt the greatest (its quite rough) a lil bit of para cord or ducttape will remedy that, and on the fast hawk, i dont really like it its too short to get an effective swing if you have any other questions about it just shoot me an email
