SOG GOV TAC for Soldiers? Or is it prone to breakage?

My Bother In-Law just joined the military and as a present I would like to give him a knife. He mentioned he liked the SOG GOV TAC, but after some research I noticed on number of instances this knife is shown broken at the hilt. I am sure most of the time this was due to over abuse the way it looked, but I want to give him a suitable blade for his needed use.

I thought in my research I found that this knife used to be made with AUS 6. So I am not sure if this was happening before they upgraded the steel from AUS 6 to AUS 8 or what, but I would feel better about giving him a knife that either does not have this issue or else the issue has been resolved. Of which case if SOG fixed the problem I would love to purchase him on as a going away present.

Thank you for your help I appreciate it!!

Wow 126 views and no responses. I have a gov tac but I can't really help as I have not used mine hard at all because after I bought it I started seeing similar things. It basically has only done food prep and is been designated for pretty knife duty. My hard use stainless knife ended up being a BRKT STS-5. I think that would be a great gift to a soldier.

For general use (meaning no heavy prying) the knife should hold up fine. It's constructed like the USMC Kabar fighting knife and that has lasted for 70 years or so. :) I don't have a Gov Tac but I have had a SOG Government which the Gov Tac is based on and that knife held up fine for me over the years. Sold my Government to a friend last year when money was tight and it looks like I'll be buying it back next pay day! :D I've held and played with the Gov Tac at a knife shop up north and loved the way it felt. It's one fast slicy knife. ;)

If he wants something more heavy duty, I'd look at the Tech Bowie (such a classy knife) or one of the SEAL knives, Pup, Team or Tigershark. I have a Seal Pup and Tigershark. The pup doesn't see much use because of the serrations. But I do like the way it feels so I'll probably pick up a SEAL Pup Elite PE soon.

Ditto! I have nothing else to add.
