go for the elite if you plan on getting a seal pup..

had both. sold the seal pup. got the elite.. havent looked back since.. great survival knife

got a chance to handle the gov-tac but preferred the seal pup elite.

but hey, they're sog can't go wrong with sog.

get both :)

how effective is the serrated part? looked like it covered the whole top which made me nervous.

gettinbg oth would be nice.

I have to agree with jca21 with regards to the Elite over the regular Seal Pup. The Elite just felt better in the hand and looked really nice as well.
I am just not sure how it would take to battoning as the top seemed quite aggresive !
If you are after a good solid knife and prefer stainless, have you considered a Blackjack Grunt, IMO this make a better Survival Knife and even though it says out of stock here, knowing the bloke at newgraham he would order you one in !

I have the old Seal pup and have been using it for a long time when they first came out. Since then, I have replaced the sheath with the new one that they have now. It is easy to sharpen the blade, but serrations do get to be a PITA sometimes to sharpen. I have used it to baton through moderate hard wood in the bush and never had any problems with edge retention. I found the serrations come in handy cutting through thick rope/line, but it is hard to choke up the blade to do finer wood working. You will get used to it using it for everything. Now that I have other knives, I only primary use it in really wet enviorments like shore fishing, camping, rafting, and hiking. I just got so used to it and I and made it work for me. I would definitley not feel under knifed in the bush if that was the only blade I had. Now that they have the model that came out with AUS 8 and the straight edge. I would say go for the straight edge and have fun.

This is really helpful!! After reading your replies and some other threads I think I'd go with the SOG seal pup elite if I go with SOG. I Like the one that has a completely smooth side.

HOWEVER! The Fallkniven S1 and Blackjack Grunt also look great. Looks like the grunt is similar to the BK10 which I had read about. While the Fallkniven looks like a similar build to the SOG pup.

What are some of the advantages of the Blackjack Grunt and Fallkniven S1?

The Blackjack Grunt has arguably the most comfortable handle ever put on a knife. The blade is large enough for almost any task yet can still be used for finer tasks.
It has a convex edge and is easily the sharpest knife I have ever held. The spine is quite thick and has a flat section that can be used with a baton !!! It also comes with a top quality sheath !!!

To me it is just a better quality knife than the SOG ( which I consider more of a combat knife )and while the steel may be better on the Fallkniven the difference would be minimal and I'd still take the Grunt !!!!

Hey guys, I just ran into this thread. The Grunt is currently unavailable. You might be able to find a store with some in stock, but I can't get more at this time.
Regards, Mike @ New Graham

bummer, well I guess that makes the decision a little easier. just the Fallkniven S1 and sog seal pup

I have a SOG Seal Pup with a kydex sheath that I carry almost everyday. It is a good knife but I would recomend the nylon sheath over the kydex. I have been carrying mine for about a year and it has been serving me well.
