I got one of the first SOG Fusion Tactical Hawks with the Thread wraped Wooden handle... On the second (2nd) chop the handle broke... No worries!!! I really liked the Hawk head design. So a milled piece of solid (6AL4V Ti) later, and I had a Tough SOB of a SOG.... A bit handle heavy, I wouldn't want to swing it all day. But it drives itself through sheet metal with ease! A mighty fine wood chopper as well!!! The 550 cord gives a tad better purchase on the choke up work. This Dude has been Abused by all in deer camp and is ready for more. I need to try the new one with the FRN stick. Or maybe SOG should replace the one that broke???? None the less I like THIS SOG very much!!! Thanks ~baba~

Looks great! I always thought the holes in the head were a bit pointless personally and would like to see a version where you didn't have to replace the handle...

Yo man I like it! If you were to make another (just the handle) how much would it kill me? :)

Seriously I think it's a good idea, this handle will last you till the end of time! Any replacing would be on the head of the hawk itself and SOG hawks are fairly inexpensive to begin with. I like the weight reducing holes, it's big enough so that stuff is easy to clean out of. Maybe if you could mill a lot of little criss cross patterns on the grip area it would improve the grip?

If you fitted a nice piece of L7 shaped to a hawk head (heat treated and sharpened of course) it would be like the Nemesis L-Max or Deta :)

Very nice, very nice :)

(Just the handle without the head itself is also nice, it is like a baton for SD)

Yeah, the holes are supposedly for weight saving but I prefer no holes as holes = reduction in strength. Since this one is handle heavy a no holes hawk head would bring the balance to normal like before (or close to anyways). Only thing then would be to develop stronger arms then :)

Which did you break? Wooden or FRN???

This is the second one I've broken. Both have been FRN. DO NOT THROW THESE HAWKS. This time it broke when I even had a good stick. Who woulda thought?

Here's my original thread with pics. Broke in the same exact place as last time. In fact, nearly identical.

Oh, and for anyone who knows, what size Torx bit is used for the bolts on the head of the SOG hawk??

The Hawk Head is OutFreekinStanding!!!! I have beat the Shit out of mine and just do Regular Sharpining.... I don't know what SOG's idea of a Tactical Hawk is/was??? I think they put it together then tested it tactically putting butter on toast or somthing???? I still tell people who want a good hawk, "Get the SOG hawk make an Aluminium or Ti Stick, do the swap and enjoy for ever" A couple Buds I know have tried other woods some still broke and others are still in test mode.... Thanks for looking and for the kind words!!!!~baba~

Very nice work! I assume even if you hollowed out a good portion of the handle and kept the wall thickness decent it would still be very tough.
