Hello everyione,,
Long time lurker, first time poster...I have been getting more interested in expanding my blade collection lately. I have recently picked up a Spyderco Tenacious for my wife and an Ontario Rat 1 for myself. We are very happy with both so far! I am interested in knives that are affordable and and have good reviews. I am now looking at picking up my first EDC fixed blade knife and have been looking at the SOG Instinct G10 and CRKT Minimalist.

I have never seen the SOG, but have seen the CRKT in a store and thought it looked interesting, but pretty tiny. Looking at the SOG online, I really like how the sheath appears to be adjustable for owb/iwb and both right and left handed...I just can’t find as many reliable reviews on it.

So, has anyone had experience with both? What are your thoughts? What other blades am I leaving out that I should look at in this price range?

Thanks!

The way the minimalist drops in and licks into your hand is amazing. And I have big hands. Definitely a great design. Crappy steel but for the price it’s acceptable.

No experience with the SOG.

I think that CRKT let's a person try some designs from some great knife makers, and at an affordable price.
Check out the talent...

If your like me, just a hard working middle class guy, then CRKT lets you get a taste of some great custom knife maker's offerings.

Plus, I'm not a fan of SOG.

And I apologize for not addressing the specific knives in your original post.

The deep finger grooves of the Minimalist turn me way off. Neither am I a fan of SOG. I have had a couple of them. One was stolen and I don’t miss it. The other I gave away.

Here are five small knives that I will carry, all of them under $40 except the Mora, which goes a little over.

The Mora is the Classic No.1, with a very sharp laminated blade. I haven carried this one much yet, but it is slimmer and more compact than the regular-sized Moras, which carry so well in the pocket due to their light weight.

I have carried the one Anza for years, usually in a moto tank bag, but otherwise in a front or rear pocket. Anza offers a lot of small knives, many under $40.

The Mini Skrama and the Baryonyx Grimalkin both come in around $30. The Grimalkin comes with a squarish sheath suited well for a back pocket. I kept the price down on the Mini Skrama by cobbling up a rudimentary pocket slip out of a yogurt tub and Gorilla tape. Varusteleka offers a close fitting sheath as well.

My only experience with SOG is the Terminus XR and I will recommend it any day of the week (in either D2 or CTSBDZ1)
