I've been a bit unimpressed by some of the comments people here make about SOG knives. I recently bought a SOG Agency because the finish looked incredible! I should get it tomorrow.

But recently I've been wondering about the Jungle Warrior. It appears to have a decent reach (9.75" x .19" blade) and 8Cr13Mov stainless steel, which is about like AUS8. I know a good KaBar would most likely be a better choice, but I'm really looking for a knife with a fairly decent stainless steel. It would pull light duty and serve mostly as a self defense knife when out in the middle of nowhere.

I understand that the Jungle Warrior doesn't come particularly sharp, but heck, that's what they say about me! Anyway, if someone has some good points and bad points about the knife, I'd like to hear them. I'd prefer to go with something by Cold Steel, but knives as large as the Jungle Warrior would be far more expensive and a lot heavier.

I'd rather have a good machete. I've looked at them, and just am not too impressed. I own/love a number of SOG products though inlcuding the Flash, Aegis, Camp Aura, etc.

I like SOG's fixed blades. I don't like a big blade made of 8cr13mov though. You'd probably be better off with a condor machete for the money, imho

KaBar would most likely be a better choice.

At your price point I'd be going for the black KaBar fighting/utility serrated edge. If you are only pulling light duty you don't have to worry about the 1095 carbon steel just keep it dry and/or lightly oiled.

Chris Pierce - you are recommending a Condor machete for light duty and self defense?

I like Sog but as suggested I think you'd be better off with a Condor or even Marbles machete (Both made by Imacasa). I have a $15 Marbles 1075 14" steel blade. Sure, it isn't stainless but it's a great blade.

Thanks for the replies. Cold Steel uses stainless steel in many of its fixed blades and the Jungle Warrior has a steel that is said to compare favorably to AUS8. I was looking at it as a good self defense knife, as I said, so weight and balance would be the points I'd go with. The Jungle Warrior goes for fifty bucks about, but the Ka-Bar knives also go for about that price. I just wanted to see if there's any Jungle Warrior fans out there. Apparently not.

Save your money and get a BK9, that looks like a pos that would likely snap from hard use. What self defense capabilities do you need?

KABAR does make a stainless steel version. Cold Steel and Ontario also make some stainless fixed blades.

I'm sorry, is there a reason that I shouldn't be? Condor makes great tools.

I was just double checking. A machete didn't come to mind when I read the original post, nor do I liken any of the Condor machetes to the Jungle Warrior. mainly because the lack of a pointed tip, which I would find useful in a self defense scenario. However, if he hadn't mentioned self defense I would totally agree with you. A Condor Golok just happens to be on my Amazon wish list.

Don't get me wrong. I like Sog and understand your question. I tend to agree with the general consensus that as blade size increases the desirability of stainless steel decreases.

This has more to do with the assumed intended uses of larger blades that don't usually include SD. If you are insistent on going the stainless route they're plenty of quality offerings but they are very expensive and well beyond your stated price point.

For general use that would include SD I can't recommend Ka-Bar enough. In particular the Large Heavy Bowie (Under $50) but again it's not stainless but the price is right and the quality is there.

If stainless really is that important I suggest you look at some of the Condor offerings in 420HC. If properly heat treated 420HC is some really good stuff. Very tough. They offer quite a bit in the price you've suggested. They do call them Machete / knives but if you look at the designs they are mainly of the bowie variety.

I've seen some of the utube vid's of the Jungle Warrior and it seemed to hold up but as stated for the money I think you can do much better at your price point.

Sog makes some really good knives and I'm not knocking them at all. Just suggesting other options.

Good luck though with whatever you decicde.

This knife is full tang?
Yes, it's full tang.

Sturdy handle.

But it's a knife, primary concern should be the blade - how well will it cut, what types of material, and how durable is the blade? Nothing about this knife inspires me with confidence... YMMV
I'm also leery of SOG's "Jungle" line after the limit-test on the Jungle Primitive...
