SOG knives -- why the dull edge?

This is just something I've wondered. I've bought a few SOG fixed-blade knives in the past, and they've come with dull edges. Is this something they do with all their fixed blades? I also recently got my hands on one of their flash series knives, and it came razor-sharp.

Why do they do this? I know it doesn't take much to sharpen one up, but it kinda turns me off from buying fixed blades from them.

Actually SOG is known for their knives coming exceptionally sharp from the factory. You must have gotten a few bad apples. Any SOG I ever got was at least shaving sharp right out of the box.

I dunno...All 5 of my SOG fixed-blade knives are VERY sharp. In-fact thay are SO sharp that the hair on my arm jumps off if they see the blade coming at 'em for "testing". Did you buy yours new?

Bought them brand-spankin' new.

Well, mayhaps I'll buy some more (my eye's on the mini-tsunami). If everyone else is getting good ones, I must have just been unlucky. That's good though, I really like their designs, put was put off by the "dullness" of them.

I just got a Cold Steel Peace Keeper in their 420 sub-quenched steel. Talk about a piece 'o' crap.

Your knives were built either on a Monday or a Friday. From now on try to get a Wednesday knife and stay away from the new guys knives.

(LOL) Good one! Although anyone that hasn't studied organizational behavior, and organizational theory and development might not get it! :D

I've had no problem(s) with SOG (either fixed -OR- folder ; I just got the Pentagon Elite (shavin' sharp;))) Best bet is to contact Ron Andersen :

ron@sogknives.com

I'm sure one or two slipped by quality control :)

AET ;)

I suppose if it's not sharp, and you bought it new, Ron@SOG wuld take care of you if you want them to sharpen it for you.

Well yeah, they are low end in the Cold Steel line, 420 steel..

If you wanted a Double Edged Dagger the Tai Pan would have been a much better choice...AUS 8A Steel, 7 1/2" blade.

Burchtree - I don't really think your experience is typical. I don't own any SOG fixed blades, but the SOG folders I'ver purchased were very sharp indeed.

A good friend of mine was used to very, very sharp knives and did not consider anything less than a high quality kitchen knife, or a straight razor to be adequately sharp...

Now, utility and field knives are not made that sharp because a minute's use will destroy an edge like that...

I'm very sorry for your problems. All SOG knives are meant to come very, very sharp. It is always possible for a knife to have slipped through our quality control. If that is the case, I’m very sorry. At any time, if anyone is unsatisfied with the knife they have received, they need only send it back to us for review so we can take care of it. You'll find return instructions here.

My direct phone number is: 425.771.6230, ext 228. Please feel free to call me with any questions.

Ron -- thanks for the info. I think these guys have convinced me to get back on the SOG train. I think a mini-tsunami will likely be in my next purchase order.

If you know Matthew in the P.R. or marketing department, tell him thanks for me. I'm writing an article for Camping Life magazine featuring pocketknives, and he was able to get me info and a sample for pictures quickly of one of your Flash series knives.

Ankerson -- I wish I could afford the Tai-Pan. I've always been a fan of Cold Steel, and I figured I would try out the 420 versions. Not pleased, but it's not going to stop me from buying more CS knives. I'll make sure they're in the reliable Carbon V. ;)
