SOG makes some great fixed-blade knives that perform well and don't cost a heck of a lot.
I have two SOG Seal Pups; one with the original kydex sheath, and one with the new style groove sheath. The kydex sheaths are of decent quality, but I would have bought leather if it had been available. I also have an SOG Northwest Ranger hunting knife, which came with a leather sheath. The NW Ranger is a great knife, but often overlooked.
Both the Seal Pup and the Northwest Ranger are tough knives. The AUS-6 stainless takes a great edge, and holds it well. Both knives need a sharpening after heavy use, but remember that most knives will need to be sharpened. I don't understand where people got the idea that a good knife doesn't need to be sharpened.
The Seal Pup has a hard Zytel handle. Finger grooves and checkering provide a secure grip in wet situations, and even when the handle is covered in oil. The Ranger has a softer Kraton handle, also checked. This provides a very secure and comfortable grip in most situations.
The Seal Pup and NW Ranger have serrations on the lower portion of the blade. These serrations are more rounded than is normal, and work very well at cutting. The Blade of the Seal Pup is relatively thick, and partially flat ground as opposed to hollow; it could be used for prying if necessary. The Ranger has a fully flat-ground blade, which makes it a poor tool for prying but a great cutter.
The Seal 2000 and Seal Pup Elite, being made from the same materials as the Seal Pup, are most likely of similar high quality. Any of SOG's fine fixed-blades would make a great user. I highly recommend the Seal Pup.
