I picked up a SOG at a recent show in Colorado Springs, SOG box is marked "LTD LEATHER GOVERNMENT 17 of 250". I'm familiar with the Govt and Govt Ageb\nt models, but have never seen the leather stacked handle version -- very muuch like a Recon Bowie but smaller. Also has a SOG tan leather sheath (no stone).
Can you give me any specifics -- I've seen one since but without the box and no idea of a number. The local SOG dealer (Naked Edge) doesn't have any info in his catalogs either.
Very nice knife, thanks for the help,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Great knife you picked up there! If it's in mint condition, you have a very coveted and highly collectible version of the Government. The number on the box should match a number engraved on the crossguard very near the blade tang.

Here's a relevant portion scanned from an old brochure relating to the series of knives from which your Limited Government came.

The blade in length and materials match the standard Government (6.25" x .160" blade, AUS6A Stainless steel). The Limited Government and Desert Dagger came with the leather handles, while the NW Ranger and Pentagon came with Cocobolo handles. Though I don't know exact original MSRPs, they were around $130. This series was manufactured in the early to mid 1990s.

I don't know a whole lot more, but if you have further questions, I'll try to get answers for you.

Mike,
Ron can give you a better answer, but I'll give it a shot.
I had one as well. (Someone offered me twice what I paid for it, so I foolishly sold it- kept the wife happy). That was right AFTER I got my Scuba/Demo
There were 250 made, numbered on the brass handle, at the top by the blade. It is a very nice knife, and probably worth holding on to.
I believe it is AUS6 steel (440A), brass buttcap and crossguard. If I remember correctly, the number was LG13. It was part of a series of limited edition knives (250 each) including a leather handled Desert Dagger, Cocobolo NW Ranger, and another that I can't recall...
BTW, the Bowie sheath fits it rather nicely... not quite like the Bowie, but enough to use well, and it has the stone.
Hope this helps. See Ron, I do listen...

Ron, Bob -- thanks for the info, I just checked the knife as you said Ron, and it is marked "017" on the guard. Butt cap appears to be polished aluminum. Kind of a modern version of the old PAL36. Yeah, think I'll hang on to it, very nice addition.
A seller in England tells me he got $200 for one at private sale over there about 2 months ago(couldn't get his reserve on ebay).
My only other SOG is a SOG 6 folder (which, by the way, fits perfectly in the standard 4" ballistic nylon pouches available at any Army-Navy store). Perfect daily carry knife.

Mike,

It is supposed to have the aluminum buttcap... as did mine...
I got $200 for mine.
