that really sucks about your knife. its pretty basic knives are sharp and cut things, they will get through plastic. but that bowie with the leather handle you got there is looking very nice. i've wanted one of those for so long, but can't afford to buy one. looks like a great set of knives. have you called up sog and asked how much to reprofile it maybe?

That has to be dissappointing and really frustrating.

It is hard to tell from the pics. I assume it can be "fixed", but then it might need to be refinished.

Question is, if that is done will you be happy with it as part of your collection? Don't know how picky you are about something you've obviously put a lot of time and effort into.
If its going to bother you, and returning it is apparently not an option you want to take, get it back to serviceable condition and move it to someone else who just wants a user.
And...
Take the $100 UPS is offering. I'd say the seller owes you some compensation too, plus the money you paid for insurance he didn't buy. Can't believe he'd ship that without insurance. Five knives for "BIG BUCKS" and he skimps on the insurance?

I mean really how hard is it to pack something properly?

Chris may give you some idea what can be done at SOG, or give them a call.

SOG DOG #2

Thanks guys for the input.. I have never dealt directly with SOG before other than buying SOGS on ebay.. I will see if Chris can do anything!! This is a big let .....

I would say that the seller probably didn't know how to ship knives. Honestly I would have thought that UPS would have done a good job of handling the package.

SOG did put a new edge on my midnight tigershark, which had a heavily pitted edge from the previous owner. You just have to pay for return shipping and sharpening. They can probably grind the tip for you to give you a pointy one. What they can't do (I asked) is to gun-blue the knife. So you risk damaging the gun-bluing if they sharpen it for you. But they did a great job on mine and Chris@SOG handled the whole thing for me.

Thanks bunch! I emailed Chris at SOG and hoepfully he will let me know!! Also I met a guy on the net who offically approved to work on vintage PUMAS.. He said he would fix the blunt and reblue for 50$.. I thought that was a great deal..I dont know the guy but he is on the knifeguild of FLorida.. I will see what Chriss says cause i dont know what would happen if he reblue it.. The knife is beautiful mint but the blue has lost its darkness throughout the years.. THANKS FOR THE POST!

Sorry to here of your damaged knife. Hopefully Chris/Sog can do something with your knife. That being said, the good guy that sent it to you improperly packaged/no insurance(Which you paid for!!) should have to pay the cost of the repair. If Sog charges you 25.00 the good guy that shipped you the knife, should pay you 25.00. Maybe next time he will package the merchandise better and buy the insurance that the buyer paid for. Just my 2 cents. Hope it all works out.

Thanks Vic! YEah he said he would send me 70$ for the hassle.. He made a bone headed move on a very hard to find knife .. really sucks!!

I emailed Chris but no luck yet;o(

the best thing to do is take it out in the woods, chop down a couple of trees, maybe whack a few granite rocks (I did that with my Tigershark) just because you can ..... and pretty soon you'll never even notice the tip dingie thingie.

Cheers,

Carl

oh, and p.s. how can you possibly be depressed ?? You have a super-rare totally awesome one-in-a-gazillion SOG ..... Mr SOG himself may not even have one of those .....

Thanks Pig Hunter for the support;o) LOL! U are right but I like to keep these baby's as mint as possible.. Did u guys see the 3 ebay auctions?

I wonder if Mr.Sog knows about em?

(( auction-spotting ))

Sounds like the seller is taking care of you. Good for him. It's a holiday weekend so Chris @ SOG is probably out of the office. Give them till Wednesday morning to get back to you, then if there is no email, call.

New Pig Hunter and I are users and I agree with him, put it to use. Clean after use, but don't baby it. Allow your kids to see you using it and let them use it a little when they are older. The more memories they have of you using it, the more it will mean to them when they get it. We apreciate you sharing it with us, even if it's not going to be a hard use knife. :)

And if you ever want to part with the Bowie or Tech I, let me know. ;)

dax,

minty is good .... right up till you chop some granite. LOL !! glad you appreciated the humor.

wildmanh and badbobby and I, we have another SOG pal, he's been known to do the safe-queen lotsa polishing thing ..... but with our encouragement he's been getting better, though he's not yet to the granite chopping stage. Maybe next year.

Cheers,

Carl

Granite chopping! WOW!! hehe...

Anyways thanks to ANOTHER knife company( idont want to name any names) they are going to help me out!! Chris at SOG appears to ignore my emails so I guess SOG wont be helping a fellow SOG collector.. I guess this just reinforces what few have said about SOGS customer service..

I would think they would want to keep the vintage spirit alive.. Oh well thanks to a few good men I can enjoy it myself!!

BTW-- I am also a AL MAR lover too(vintage) and I have the same problem.. I have had my vintage AL MAR fixed by another knife company for next to nothing.. THe knife company i use makes an awesome production knife!

Pig Hunter and others who have responded to this THREAD- THank u so much!! I will post pics of my redone SOG Midnight tigershark when I get it back.. NO THANKS TO SOG!

I have not been ignoring your email, I honestly thought I had already replied to your message but I actually replied to the email alert that was sent to me. I guess I can't read directions very well. Here is the note I had attempted to send you, but failed, on August 31 the same day I received your message.

Saw your story on the forums. Unfortunately there is not a whole lot we can do at this point. We could fix the tip but we do not have the capability to re-blue the knife at this point. I wish I had better option for you but we just don't deal with those knives much any more.

We would be happy to re-profile the tip for you but we do not have the capability to re-blue the knife any longer. I am glad to hear that you have found someone that can help you out and fix the knife for you. I wish that was something we could do but unfortunately there is not.

Chris, Thank so much for the reply!! So sorry to rush to judgement.. I think my bad attitude came from my own issues with the seller and i felt helpless with this VINTAGE SOG GRAIL I have been trying to get for 6 months... Anyways THANKS FOR THE REPLY!! I will PM you when I am ready and I have no prob paying for the service.. Today I ran into a Local knifemarker in Homestead and he wants me to bring it by his place on Saturday... So Lets see!! He has custom knives on arizonaknifes and bladeart so he should be well qualified!!

Again sorry for my crappy attitude but when I sent u the PM a while ago you were my last hope;o)

Thanks again!
D.
