I was browsing an SOG catalog I received in the mail the other day and noticed some new blades with some new steels .

SOG KIKU: OU-31 steel
- made by Nippon Koshuha Steel Co
- HRc 64, claiming x3 tougher than that of D2
- 10 times longer edge holding than ATS-34

SOG Team Leader: Duratech 20CV
- powder metallurgy stainless tool steel
- increase wear-resistance (4.0% vanadium)
- 35% tougher than S30V

Note you can download the Test Results (Edge retention testing) for 20CV vs. S30V

Interesting. Has any other maker used these steels?

As for the Matsuda's colaboration - it's not SOG who will be using the steel as these knives will be made by Matsuda

Understood. Such are how collaborations typically work, but SOG is still marketing and selling :D. SOG is making grand claims about the steel, which I have little experience with (hence the post :p)

The only way to know would be to try those SOGs and compare them to other knives of similar shape made with different steels. Most knife companies like making big claims and all knife companies love living up to or exceeding their claims. As the knife-obsessed consumer, only you can tell if it's love or like.

It is not surprising that there is better CATRA results over S30V as there are a lot more carbides. However it is interesting that the S30V curve starts to rebound at the end. I would like to see the cutting continue.
