SOG multi tools... should I get one?

I like EDCing multi tools because I love the occasionals where I bust out the right tool to safe the day. So far, my multi tool collection consists of the LM wave (old), LM Charge, Vic. SwissTool X, and Vic. Spirit, with the LM Charge and Vic. Spirit rotating as my current EDC multi tool. I am eager to try other brands besides Leathermen and Victorinox, but I am reluctant to spend my money on a "2nd rate tool". I heard alot of great things about SOG's multi tools, but none of the shops near my area sells them. So how does a SOG model of similar size/weight of the Charge and Spirit compare with the competition?

a little further background, I prefer a multi tool that isn't big and clumsy. I prefer slim and light.

The fact that SOGs aren't sold at the corner store have kept me from getting one as well. I've had the chance to handle one and I'd certainly run out and pick one up if I could. Unfortunatly, I'm not the type who can order on the internet and wait for delivery :thumbdn:

Wal-mart carried them for a while, but ordering online is still the better deal.

BUT, the SOG powerlock is a big tool, at least as big as the original ST. It has amazing compound leverage, changeable tools and locking implements, but it is neither slim nor light.

I would avoid the other SOGs (which are smaller), as they do not have locking implements, but that's just me.

So I suspect you wouldn't like it... sorry.

I have 3 Sogs. If you already have Leatherman and Vic multi-tools I think you will be disapointed with the Sog. I dont feel they are anywhere near as good as the Surge/Charge/Swisstool.

I EDC a SOG PowerLock.

It has been a fantastic tool, and I would highly recommend it.

Wally world does indeed sell them at a reasonable price. I broke the plier jaw off on my original, and I took it in to Walmart, and they gave me a new one on the spot.

I have a Para-tool that I carry alot. It is amazingly thin and light. I ordered a saw for it from SOG and am very pleased with it. I think it is an underrated design.

I have a powerplier, powerlock, powerlock EOD, and two paratools. I think the quality is at least on par with the other companies...if not better, and they are made in the U.S.A. I highly recommend them, and Wal-Mart carries the powerlock and powerplier at good prices. Hope that helps, Jim

I currently EDC a Victorinox Spirit, but my previous EDC was a SOG PowerLock. I have also owned and carried a SOG Pocket PowerPlier. Both of my SOGs were well-designed, well-made, and tough.

I think SOG has the best multi-tool pliers available, although their handle ergonomics are not ideal. Their other tools are solid, but mediocre. It annoys me that the tools fold out from the inside of the handles and that they "clump". On the other hand, one big plus is that the tools can be easily changed out if you want a different selection.

I've a Harley Motortool which is made by SOG and being in the UK I bought it for edc because the blades don't lock! I've found it very good and SOG's customer service is excellent. I swapped some tools round, replacing a very agressive serrated blade for some substantial scissors and I've now an excellent set of tools. Being HD branded the sheath is a very robust leather afair with buckles and tassles - a bit over the top but very sturdy.

ive been carrying one now for a year and i think its the strongest of the bunch being made now.ive used a muti tool now for 15 years everyday at my job (cemetary) and broke about everyone that everyone talks about on here but the sog after a year is still holding up.very pleased with it.

I, as well as a co-worker or two, carried them at the FD. I never saw one of them fail to do anything that was required of them. I also had a Powerplier (with TiNI coating no less), but I thought it was rather large for EDC. I like the thinner, lighter tools like the original Leatherman PSTs, and I thought the SOG was every bit the equal if not better.

hmmm... based on the impressions I got, I think it is best to test one out before purchasing. Guess it is time to make a road trip to a far away knife shop!
