Let's keep the Cold Steel bashing out of this PLEASE(yeah, yeah, I know LT is the Devil:rolleyes:).
My step-brother is looking at getting a Cold Steel Recon Tanto, or a SOG Daggert 2. He is NOT interested in more expensive knives(he ain't me); these are his two choices.
I own neither, so I cannot point him to the correct one.
For your information, he would be getting one of the NEW Recon Tantos, with the newer/inferior steel.
SO, let's get the discussion going. I want to be able to tell him:
-which has a "better" steel
-which seems more durable
-which handle feels nicer in the hand
-which seems a better "bang for the buck"
Thanks in advance, and remember, NO COLD STEEL BASHING!!!
Start your own thread if you wish to do that, or be a necroposter in one of the MANY CS bashing threads already in existence.

Stabman, I have had two CS Tantos. Both were the Oyaban series and they were tough as all get out!!! I have NEVER had much luck with SOG so I would say Cold Steel All Day. As for my SOG statement, I have owned their FB knives and a few folders and all were lesser knives to others in the same $$$ range so I stay away now thats all...

Off to a good start.

cold steel has better value IMO.
cold steel uses carbon steel in large fixed blades, rather then sog's aus-8.
cold steel has more of a tactical look if that's what you want.
vg-1 is better then sog's aus8a,but sog's vg-10 is better then vg-1.
cold steel has more variety across the board.

But If you want a folder go with spyderco, emerson, kershaw, benchmade.
If you want fixed blade cold steel has good value, but if you want the best go with fehrman, busse.

I suggest the Recon Scout instead of the Recon Tanto. Its a much better knife utility wise, while still being a capable combat knife

-which has a "better" steel
I prefer SK-5 to AUS8
-which seems more durable
CS is quite a bit thicker at 5/16"
-which handle feels nicer in the hand
Depends on the hand.
-which seems a better "bang for the buck"
CS for me. SMKW and a few other places have the Recon Scout for $49

Hmmm, I'll suggest the Scout to him as an alternative.
