i like both the kayedex and nylon tac sheath of the sod and if i got it i would probably buy both, i like the inbuilt sharpening system of the gerber and the rescue knife with the gerber could be good, i just cant choose, advice please

Wow, that was a very difficult post to read, pennard; please slow down a little to curb some of those typos!

Anyways, I would have to personally recommend against the gerber. My experiences with Gerber have not been what I would call...positive. Have had multiple issues with my Gerber folders from literally not coming with an edge from the factory to the locks falling apart. Of course, I've heard some of their fixed blades are alright, so I can't say for sure about the LMF II.

I like SOG and don't care for most of the Gerbers that I have tried recently, so this recommendation is easy: SOG.

The built-in sharpener isn't something that would mean anything to me, so that would not be a selling point for the Gerber.

If you are going to be cutting a lot of things like rope, cord and strapping, I find that serrated blades do a better job of that kind of work. You need to get a sharpener that is designed to work on serrated blades, otherwise they are a pain to sharpen.

I own, and have used, both of these knives in the field although I do not claim to be any sort of expert. The Gerber would be my choice if I had to choose only one of those two. It is very capable of light/medium chopping, and I had very little success with the SOG doing the same work. IMO the Gerber is one of the most comfortable handles of any knife I own. The sheath is also top notch. Gerber's reputation has taken some hits over some of their imported knives, but I believe the LMF II is made in the USA. Now, I know you are asking specifically about those 2 knives, but if I had to do it all over again I would buy a Ranger RD6 or a Scrapper 6 for about the same price. I own those as well and prefer them both over the SOG and Gerber. You'll probably be pleased either way you go though.

I haven't used the Gerber, so I can't compare. But I regularly carry the Seal Pup dayhiking and it has always performed well. In fact, I bought a second one, I like the first one that much.

I'd go with the SOG, I gave a seal pup elite to a friend of mine and he has taken it hunting several times, skinned 3 deer and many small critters and has not had to sharpen it yet.
