SOG-PE18 - to my regret disappointing.

Yesterday I received the SOG Elite 2 model and was pretty disappointed.
The blade was not adjusted in the middle of the handle, with the effect that the blade scratchs along one handle side. The scratches, as the result of this inaccuracy, were clearly visible and I wondered who did that.
Furthermore the so called “shark tooth” tip looked like a bad homework, totally uneven grinds.
I sent the knife back and don’t want a replacement.

A complete 100% QC control is only reasonable on custom knives that are one at a time made. On factory knives you can't expect that every knife passes a QC check, thus bad ones get out from time to time. One way around this (for internet related purchases) is to shop through dealers that are are experienced knife users and ask them to perform a simple QC check before shipping the knife out.

In regards to replacements, assuming that the manufacturer will refund the return shipping cost and pay for the shipping back to you (it was their mistake after all), it is only fair to see if a replacement is up to spec. . Even the best production companies at times let a poor model by, what is critical is how they handle such mistakes.

You should give it another try. That is, unless there was some design feature which ruled it out of your wanting one.
Like Cliff said, there is always gonna be one or two that get by in a production environment that had no business getting out into circulation.

I can't add a word that wouldn't repeat what's been said by Cliff and Misque. Give the dealer a call, and see what you can work out.

I have heard a couple of favorable reviews on this piece (although I've never handled one).., so if you liked the design intially, maybe the "real deal" would please you?

It is not that I think due to one bad experience all knives of SOG have a quality problem, the reason is a strange characteristic of my personality. If the first impression is bad, this first bad impression stay in my mind and therefore I wouldn’t have much enjoyment with the new knife. Not rational rather a emotional behaviour.

Hi Horus,

Sorry for your disappointment. The problems you outlined are not typical. Though a production knife cannot rival a custom in fit-and-finish, a higher standard for SOG's knives are to be had. I hope you give SOG another try.

If you'd like to email me for a further dialog, I'm certainly open to that.

Ron,

thanks for your offering, I always esteem your exemplary engagement for the SOG products and your kindness.

I agree, and have developed a habit of having knives inspected by the dealer prior to shipping. Just takes a minute, and could save both of you alot of trouble in the long run, because....

...I am the exact same way.

I think this is one of the reasons that I just cannot make myself buy products on the internet.
I just have to actually handle the merchandise before I will buy it.

Good luck,
Allen.
