These are two large tactical folders that are available on the market right now, with an average cost of about $90. Which one would you purchase, and Why.

The Gerber Applegate Combat Folder is a fine knife with one important exception; the lock sucks. I dont mean its kind of bad, I mean its the worst lock on any knife Ive ever owned. It closes with a very slight tap on the back of the open blade. When they make one with a decent lock I will carry one every day, because everything else about it would make it my favorite knife.

In contrast to Gerber's liner lock, about which I've heard other complaints in the past, SOG's PEII has the Arc lock, which is one of the best locks on the market. If you have any questions about any SOG products, ask Ron over at the SOG forum, he's one of the most friendly and helpful guys around.

I think I would choose the Pentagon Elite. Lighter weight, butt mounted clip for easier draw and the Arc-Lock is unlikely to fail on you. Also, I'm not fond of the 425 Modified used by Gerber on the Applegate Combat Folder, and there's no sheath to mess with on the SOG.

I'm a big fan of SOG (and esp. their customer service -- yay Ron!), but I must put in a good word for the Gerber A/F folder.

I would recommend, however, the A/F COVERT folder instead of the Combat ... ATS-34 steel, and a bit more convenient size (IMHO). I got a decent edge on it with my friend's sharpener (and I'm *far* from proficient at sharpening), it's comfortable in my hand. Further, the Covert (I'm not sure about the Combat) has an extra locking system that physically blocks the liner lock from disengaging unintentionally. I have not spine-whacked it yet, but it looks to stand up to some pretty good abuse!

Just my two cents ... YMMV. You probably can't go wrong with either one, truthfully.
