SOG Pentagon Elite steel type question.

I've had my share of SOGs, but can't say I was awed by them until I got my Night Vision last year (3 3/4" ATS-34 CE tanto). Great knife & the arc-lock is awesome (The equal of any B/M axis-lock I've had/tried).

Anyways, I just got a Pentagon Elite in trade today. I'm assuming it's the Pentagon Elite I. All it says on the blade is "PE" & Seki City, Japan. So, my question is, what kind of steel are these? I'm sure it's not the new one with VG-10, but are the older ones AUS 8 or possibly ATS-34 like my Night Vision? The knife is great, in that it's 4 3/4" closed with a 4" blade vs 4 5/8" closed & a 3 3/4" blade on my Night Vision.

Thanks in advance for any info that you can provide.

Your knife is either AUS8A or VG-10.
SOG stated that they would not be indicating the steel type on their Pentagon Elite knives when they switched over to VG-10 from AUS8A.

I don't think it's the greatest executive decision ever made...

Hmm, the blade on mine says "Seki-Japan" on one side & "SOG PE Pat. Pending" on the other side. If I understand correctly, if it says "AUS 8A" then that's what it is, otherwise it's the new VG-10?

Thanks.

Hey fellas I read in a thread (in BF a while ago) it had something to do with the color of the boxes which the Elite II arrives in. If it is Black with white writing or vice versa it meant the steel can be determined.

I agree it ain't the best business sense. I mean I wouldn't mind buying more than one Elite IIs if it cam in trail runs of different super-steels.

(Any guys from SOG can shine a light on this?)

Hmm, unfortunately, the box didn't come with it & the prevoius owner (That I got it from), doesn't know.

I have a feeling that it's the same one. I actually got it from someone else, but I believe he traded those 2 knives for it, yes. So, do you know which steel it has?

I haven't a clue. I traded for it about 3 months ago and it sat in a drawer until 2 weeks ago. I never looked into it to be honest.

The blades on the PE were never marked AUS8A, and Chris from SOG said the new PE's would not be marked VG-10.

Maybe you know someone with a metallurgical lab? ;) - seems that's the only way to find out what the blade steel is in your knife.

Just checked the SOG site, both the Elite I and II are VG-10.
