I want to buy one knife this month, and I'm considering the SOG Pentagon Elite.
It has their Arc-Lock as locking mechanism.

Do you consider the Pentagon to be a good choice considering
a) defensive purposes and
b) utility knife

What's your experience with the knife?

I've honestly never considered whether it would be good for defensive purposes. However I only kept the one I bought for a month. For me the handle was not all that comfortable, and the blades performance never really stacked up to others that I have used.

I owned the liner lock version of the SOG PE. ...for about a minute!! I took it back to the store and returned it. Dont like the blade, dont like the handle, dont like the blade grind or finish. I dont know much about the arc lock version.

Gotta second the comment on the clip. It is about as strong as case hardened peanut butter

I have the big 'un, the PE2 and I like it excepting the clip. It is very strong for such a light knife. The handle shape would cause me a problem in the index finger area if I needed to use it a lot at one time though. Still, it is a great big knife at a good price that carries well.

Thank's guys. I think I will order one anyhow, since it is moderately priced
(at www-tool-shop.com it costs about $91).

The arc-lock seems interesting.

I owned a SOG PE II with the Arc-Lock. I absolutley hated the clip. The locking mechanism, although strong, is not as smooth as Benchmade's Axis Lock.

Hi Guys,

I promised myself to avoid input here, allowing for the product and its features to direct the conversation from each of your experiences (either positively or negatively), but let me briefly comment only as to the clip, then quietly bow out (I will answer any other questions or comments you may wish in the SOG forum)...

Though the clip is skeletonized, we designed it both strong and springy. Clips from all manufacturers do fail because they easily catch on things, so I would be interested to know if any of your thoughts resulted from failures. We do see some of these break, but so far, not very many (an early design modification was made on first generation Pentagon Elite, liner lock, models a couple years ago).

Thank you for your indulgence...

How does the PE II compare to the Cold Steel Voyager and Gunsite?

Why are there so many people on this board praising the Cold Steel Voyager and Gunsite and Rekat Sifu?

Does the PE II have any other flaws aside from the clip?

I would be happy to see an answer to the last question (I ordered one PE II yesterday)!

By the way - Ron@SOG, you have good customer service! I ordered a printed catalogue from you, and was surprised to see that it took only a few days before I received the catalogue.

That was one of the reasons for buying the knife - a company that gives good customer service most likely produces (hopefully?) good products as well. See for instance Spyderco.

Ron,
The clip on my PE2 bent sideways while getting up from a chair. It is a chair I have used countless times with all manner of knives. This is the first failure. I also had a problem with the Microtech LCC and its skeletonized clip though not on a piece of furniture. FWIW, there is not much weight savings to be had skeletonizing a clip and it certainly diminishes it's strength. Additionally, it is harder to re-straighten a skeletonized clip.
Thanks for your interest,
David

For those with clip issues, Ron has started a thread on his SOG forum.
