I'm curious if anybody has put a powerplay multi tool to work yet? I've seen a few threads that said they had been spotted at various Home Depots - no such luck here. I currently tote a SOG powerlock at work everyday and wonder if the powerplay version is worth the price difference. Thanks for any info!

I just ordered a PowerPlay PT-510 over the internet. (It is the smaller one. The PT-525 cost more than I can afford right now.)

I will let you know what I think when it arrives.

I have not found one in any stores around here, so have not yet seen one first hand. From what clues I am hearing though, I begin to suspect that these tools are not actually being made by SOG? They are obviously just like SOG tools though. So are they being made in Taiwan under liscense from SOG?

Iron Man - I'm looking forward to hearing how your tests go - hope it's a nice multi tool. As far as the Taiwan thing, I dunno, I thought they were the same as a regular SOG but with different implements??

I don't know anything for certain. I sure hope they are built by SOG. But I am noticing that nowhere on various websites selling these tools do they brag about "Made in USA."

Also, on a previous Bladeforums thread about these tools, parnass reports:

"My Home Depot has the smaller PowerPlay tool displayed with other electrician tools in the Electrical Supply part of the store. It is in a blister pack and the price is about $60. The tool looks interesting, but I am disappointed to see the box is marked Taiwan."

I guess I'll find out for sure when mine gets here.

I am going to a conference this coming week in Florida and many tool vendors will be there. Paladin Tools who had SOG make the powerplay tool will be there, so hopefully I will get to handle the larger tool to see if it is worth the cost. I will be back home by next weekend so I will let everyone know what I think about it. The tool is supposed to be just like the powerlock but with a few different implements. That is very bad to see that one of the boxes is marked Taiwan. I am beginning to wonder if tool companies have some of there tools made in these places for companies that do the power buy like Wal-Mart and Home Depot and the rest made in the US.
I noticed a couple of years ago Wal-Mart had Gerber multipliers really cheap around Christmas time. Hope to find out where they are made while I am there.

Well, I made it back okay. The conference went wonderful, there were lots of tool venders in the exhibits section of the conference. I was even able to talk to the man that designed the powerplay tools. Let me try to shed some light on the questions raised in this thread. The smaller tool was released in November. The ones in Home Depot were a trial run. The larger tool is coming out next month. As for the made in Taiwan heres the story: the designer said that a couple of the components were made in Taiwan(punchdown blades) but the rest of the tool is all SOG. Customs required them to put that on the packaging because of those couple of components. The newer ones will say assembled in US with US and foreign components. You will be able to order components from Paladin Tools to replace or change the tools, even the plier heads from my understanding. The larger tool comes in a pouch like the powerlock but it includes the quarter inch adaptor in the bottom of the pouch. I work in the telecommunications field, so for me this tool is wonderful, it has the basic tools that a telephone/data person or even an electrician would need. If you are in one of these field or would just love something a little different get it. It has a lifetime warranty. The pivot pins on this tool are round and smooth with a 5/64 hex in the middle for adjusting and disassembling the tool. The website has most of the specifics on the tool. Go to www.paladin-tools.com for more. The replacement parts are not listed on the website yet but should be on the instructions for the tool when purchased. I plan on getting both the large and small tool. The tool is every bit sog and if you like the powerlock you will like the powerplay. They have all kinds of other great products but not that would fall into the category for this forum. Hope this is of some help

Tsquare - Glad to hear your report on the latest from SOG. Makes me want to see one up close even more now! I'm an electronics technician who does low voltage electrical work and uses a multi tool on a regular basis when my tool bag isn't handy or my screwdriver is propping open a door, etc. There are certain functions I look for in a multi tool and from what I've read so far, that paladin version of the powerlock sounds pretty dang interesting. Again, thanks for the info and I'm looking forward to eventually running across one.

Anyone that owns a Powerplay, care to do a little review?
I've had one for about 9 months i use it everyday, i'm a low volt technician it saves me having to walk 10 feet to my tool bag:D
i can do a more detailed review if you want me too.
