SOG quality not what it used to be?

Well I bought a SOG mini tac auto a few years back and have recently had to replace it due to it getting lost. I am very disappointed in the out of the box sharpness on this knife. I would say it was dull compared to what I would expect from other production knives in this price range.

I am disappointed I need to sharpen a new knife.

Hi and welcome to the forums and the SOG sub forum.

It is a little troubling that you would join a knife community and with your second post start a complaining thread in a specific manufacturer's sub forum. I hope you can offer more to this community in the future. Did you contact the manufacturer or the dealer you bought from? These things could help you with your problem a lot more than coming on here and complaining. Also the title is misleading. This is a sharpness out of box issue. Has nothing to do with the quality of the product.

FYI, out of box sharpness issues can plague any knife manufacturer. I had to sharpen my ZT 0560 out of box. I have had several Benchmades that needed a sharpening out of box. One company that I have never had to sharpen a new knife from is SOG. But this doesn't really matter because if you actually use your knives you will need to sharpen them. Heck, I rather enjoy sharpening!

Contact SOG. I feel confident that they will take care of the issue for you. "Stuff" happens.

On a side note, you should see the issues that people have with new cars which cost thousands of $$$. For instance, I have seen a brand new Corvette on the side of the road -- dead -- price sticker in the window. And, I have seen worse -- I worked for two of the big three US auto companies in the past as a Warranty Analyst.

Best regards on getting your issue resolved,
d-1

Hi. I'm not sure why you find my post 'troubling'. It is factual and timely as I just received my new TAC mini 4 days ago and joined the forum around that time as well. My first post was to buy a knife which I already paid for. So, I can assure you Im not a troll.

Misleading title? I am asking a question about a knife I own and am disappointed with. I owned another knife from SOG and didn't have this problem. I am interested to hear from others if this is a common problem or if I am expecting too much from this manufacturer. How is it misleading? If it is indeed a common occurrence then perhaps others would like to know this. Isn't that what forums are all about? Where would you have me post it? In the Benchmade forum? I would hope others would provide honest feedback on any knife and not only post superfluous puffery.

Adding further to my disappointment on this knife is the blade play being a bit more than I remember with my previous SOG auto. So from all indications I have based on my recent purchase, I am questioning the quality direction of SOG, and would like to hear from others who may have some input regarding this topic.

As for discussions with the dealer or sending to SOG, that is possible but I am due to leave the country shortly and need gear that works. They won't be able to post it to me where I'm going!

Dull knive are common. I recently bought a Spyderco Manix 2 LW with the 110v blade steel. If you were trying to cut anything tougher than butter you would have had to hit it with a baton. It is reprofiled now and that is ok for a knife that is going to be used.

Wow. Take it down a notch guy. Yes, it is troubling when a new member comes on here to complain without first contacting the proper channels (IE the dealer or the manufacturer). What aid are we going to give you that SOG or your dealer can't? Especially if where you're going there will be no post? How are we supposed to help better than those who made the knife or those that sold the knife?

You came on here to ask about a sharpening issue. I advised you to contact the dealer or manufacturer. Either those two options or sharpen the knife yourself. Like I said before, many manufacturers much more high end have knives that slip through not sharpened the way they ought to be out of the box. This is not a problem associated with just SOG. In fact my experience has been the opposite of yours. Out of the 25-30 SOGs I own, not a single one didn't come screaming sharp from the factory. Never owned an auto though, maybe it is a problem with those. If you are "leaving the country and need gear that works" do you have a sharpening plan in your kit? If you use the knife, surely you need to know how to sharpen it and have something to sharpen it with? If this is that dire of a situation I would hope you have a contingency plan.

As far as blade play, have you tried adjusting the pivot? I have never had an auto from SOG so I don't know how this works. My SOGs With SAT can be made almost play free with proper adjustment. My Aegis mini required the frame screws be tightened and the pivot adjusted but it now has zero play and still fires hard.

I truly hope your problem gets solved before you go where ever it is you are going!

It could be worse. You could be a lousy knife sharpener like me.:(

Welcome to the forum, lol. The critical banter is just something you just have to get used to. :p
I can handle "not so sharp". It's the blade play and uncentered blades that drive me crazy. I have had really good luck with my Sog purchases since 2011, when I started collecting, hoarding, etc.
I am super happy with my recent Zoom purchase. It is not a hard use knife, but is flat, DEEP carry, fast and relatively light. I was able to eliminate all blade play without slowing down the blade deployment. This might make a good, inexpensive ($60-$80) back-up blade for your auto.

Sometimes there is a burr that just needs to be stropped off. All the sogs i see new at gun shows are shop out of the box.

I don't think this is common. I have purchased 6 knives from them in the past few months - two Vulcans, a Twitch II, a Trident, a Seal Pup, and a Seal Team. Every one of them was shaving sharp out of the box.

Sorry you had bad luck, but that's all I think it was.

I am very surprised to hear this. I own quite a few SOG's and they have all been VERY sharp out of the box.
