Can anyone describe to me how the Kraton handles are attached to SOG folders? (EG; Tomcat, Sogwinder et al)

Thanks!

I think that they are grown on in their underground lab.:D. Actually, I imagine some sort of industrial "super"glue is used. The Kraton on my Tomcat appears to be VERY secure, as it looks to be a very tight inlay fit between the pommel and the bolster (I THINK the upper steel piece is called a bolster...).

Somewhere along the line I got the impression that there was a bar of steel inside the Kraton (or the Kraton is wrapped around the steel)with part of the underside of the steel welded to the liners, esentially pinning the wrapped underside of the Kraton scale between a sandwich of steel....

I want to remove the Kraton from one and add some Carbon Fiber scales but if I'm right in what I think it will make it pretty hard...

I'd confirm with Ron, but I think SOGman is right. If I remember that's what Ron described when the re-handled my Tomcat after BC coating...;)

Well, listening to Glockman clammer on about the Tomcat II (;))has me ordering one tomorrow.

I had planned on getting a Night Vision to match my Titanium Vision but the Tomcat II sounds too good. Just can't find one in Cocobolo anywhere...

May also add one or two of the smaller lockbacks as well, they could be my "guinea pigs" ;)

Ron, are you dodging this question? :)

On a side note, I ordered a Tomcat II, Night Vision and a Cocobolo Stingray today, should be here tomorrow...

Hey guys. I'd like to be in a position to be able to dodge something. Right now, everything is hitting me right now right between the eyes! :)

Now for your answer. These guys have pretty much got it. Though not the best angle, look at this image:

You have two stainless steel liners making up the foundation of the knife. They are 100% flat, are cut the outer dimensions of the handle, and make the sandwich between which the blade rests. In the image, you can see it's sliver under the Kraton slabs. The stainless steel bolsters are soldered onto the bolsters on both end leaving the area in the middle open and flat. The Kraton slabs are made slightly over sized. They are glued into place using special, industrial epoxy. We also also the glue to set into place while resting in a vice. After dry, the slabs are trimmed to be flush.

I hope this helps. Hopefully "better late than never" applies.

Thanks Ron, you the man!

I wasn't trying to pressure you for an answer... really I wasn't ;)

Sorry for the typos above. You guys know I'm generally better than that. I'm just too damned tired to fix 'em! ;)

[I just crossed over 14 hours for today and not yet done at work. I'm grumpy...can't you tell?]
