so i was up at ag russell today (

) and was looking around, knowing i was going to buy something.
so i came across a sog recon bowie in the used knives case, and it looks like its in decent shape.im getting it (lay away-poor student here) at a good price.
but i have a few questions... hows the steel? i read it was comparable to 0-1,but can anyone give me some specs on its durability and resistance to rust and corrosion?
also, has anyone had a problem with the leather handles? i might be going to a college on the edge of a swamp (almost literally) in louisiana next year, and plan on carrying this baby around a bit.just a little worried about the leather lasting.

if anyone could help me out i would really appreciate it.
thanks,
MO.

Hi Maurice,

Don't worry, this knife will serve harsh outdoor conditions. Remember that the Recon Bowie (as well as the SOG Bowie and now the SCUBA/DEMO) is a replica made to a higher standard than its original counterpart. MACV/SOG users in Vietnam used and abused their knives in some very harsh environments. The leather handle is resin-soaked for strength and lasting durability. This style handle has been a tried-and-true design for many decades.

SK-5 is an outstanding high carbon tooling steel, but can rust if not cared for. Clean it, dry it, protect it, doing it regularly, and it should be just find. Here's a couple of sites on steel (and yes, find it similar to 0-1): http://www.agrussell.com/steel/index.html
http://www.bladeforums.com/features/faqsteel.shtml

If you have any further questions for me, please let me know. If anyone else has input, jump in...

Hi Maurice,

You sound a little sick. I think another knife may cure you!

Maybe a Trident to keep the Recon from being lonely?

Glad you like it. After you "swamp test" it, let us know what you think.

Take care.
