Purchased SOG Recondo FX from BladeHQ. Listing for ad clearly states cryo 440C steel. SOG website says '440C' steel
The box it came in clearly says 'CRYO 440A' STEEL on the black label describing its features. I wrote an email to BHQ saying 'what gives'.
Anyone know if there are more than one version? not sure what is going on, but I feel BladeHq should have listed the knife with 440A if that is what on the factory box.
Thoughts? Not being a sticker, but I've had wonderful 440C from Ennis and others, and 440A that was on par with Pakistani crap. I'd like to know what I'm buying.
Anyone know? I feel like a bait and switch here...

Knife says '440' no letter designation. From a lesser company, I'd assume 440A and that's it. But their own SOG website says 440C. This isn't an amateur outfit, right?
Sure would like to know what I'm buying. Saw deal, got excited..... I"ll await BHQ reply and see what they know. I notice Knifeworks also says 440C in headline and under specifications, but in description it says "440A SS". Gotta love it. it's only money, right?......sigh...

sog is now gsm....known for shipping cold steel machetes(strongest sharpest knives company statement) without edges put on them, amongst other fun.....

One reason I like to stay with 'majors' is precisely to avoid questionable steel, etc. People make fun of some Chinese makers, (I happen to be impressed with Artisan and others) but we pay more for Spyderco Benchmade SOG CRKT and others to avoid this ambivalence. Shouldn't be so hard, I dont get it.

its gsm now.....gsm so far hasn't impressed many of us with their cost cutting measures and lack of oversight. maybe they'll improve, but im likely being overly positive there.

I got a new sog pillar that has perfect grinds and came very sharp. Not a fan of GSM but I wonder how much say/interaction they have with cold steel/sog other than numbers in a ledger.

a lot. they are running those companies day to day operations.

diamdave diamdave , I think you should give Blade HQ a minute to figure this out. They have an outstanding reputation, and I can personally say my dealings have been great.

You should know that none of the sellers put any of the products they receive under a microscope to make sure everything is perfect. Blade HQ probably has no idea they ship the knife like that. This could be... get ready for it... *gasp*.... a mistake!

I purchased lots of products, some consumable and some ready to go to work to keep my contracting business going. I have not one single company left that gives dynamic customer service, and never, ever makes a mistake.

CS has offended some here, and this will no doubt turn into a CS/SOG/GSM bash fest before long.

Betcha if you call Blade HQ (you know, where you bought the damn thing) and tried to resolve it with them you would have much better luck than coming here.

SOG hasn't sold a knife using 440A (Actually Aus6) since 2007. When they switched from Seki to Taiwan manufacture they went to Aus8.
I find it hard to believe that the new Recondo FX would actually use 440A. Something that few makers are using today.
On the other hand GSM owned Cold Steel is selling knives usuing 4034. So I suppose anything is possible.
It could be anything from just a labeling error, to a corporate marketing conspiracy. I would rely on answers from SOG itself and if the dealer can provide some insight.

Could the OP show us a photo of this label that says 440A?

The SOG website says it's Cryo 440c so that's likely what it is. I'd assume it's a mistake on the box.

That's really a good point. I have not received a printed box dedicated to one knife in so long I can't remember. The box either has a white space for labeling as it moves through the system, or most likely it simply has a sticker on it. I have personally received more than one knife with the wrong sticker on the box.

Seems like it would be pretty easy to grab some old box stock, or to get a roll of the wrong stickers and happily apply them while you're drinking your soda, texting with friends with your earbuds in because you have such a sucky job.

Hey, Dave.
Sorry to hear about the knife steel, but thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Feel free to shoot us a call between 7:00am - 5:00pm MST Monday - Friday and ask to speak with Branson, or send me an email with the subject "ATTN: Branson" and I will get this taken care of for you.

I look forward to hearing from you! -Branson

Thank you Branson. I didn't see your reply until this evening, I spoke earlier with a very courteous and helpful 'Keith' and 'Laykin' who offered me options. I'd still like to hear from SOG exactly what they are using, I called (no luck) and emailed, we'll see if I get an answer. Thank you very much. For those who asked, I have a screenshot of box, been away from BF quite awhile so just need to figure out how to insert a screenshot here....."image cannot be loaded from pass link" when I try to upload from Flickr.

Here it is. SOG box stating 440A
Thanks. Well there it is. My bet is that it's a printing error. Since 440C is stated on SOG's site and all dealers it seems.
But hopefully BLHQ a/o SOG will clear up this mystery.

Laykin......This is the first time I have ever seen this name!!! Aside from my daughter Laikyn.......

Pretty cool...... Sorry for inserting left field in your post......
