What is your opinion of the SOG Recondo? What is it's past? Is it a good knife overall? Thanks, Bob

Recondo, the X-42 with BG-42 steel. Is that the one you mean ??

I have one and I like it except..... the steel is so hard I can't figure out how to get an edge on it !!
I know I need to use diamond-thingies of some sort, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

As for the BG-42 steel, I had an X-42 Field Knife with BG-42 steel. My pal Tim knows how to sharpen and has all the tools, and the edge he put on it was fantastic.

So BG-42 is great stuff, but ya gotta have not only a gift for sharpening, but all the right kinda tools.

Cheers,

Carl

Yep, agree with that, I can't get much of an edge either, you didn't say anything about the sheath. Which I thought was awful.

considering much sog knives cost here in australia the least you could do is make them come with a DECENT sheath. i.e leather or cordura or nylon even , instead of editing my complaints perhaps you should do something about them , ay , spencer frazer?

Just to give you a little clarification, I do not work for SOG (I did up until several years ago) and no longer have influence in the product they make.

I am, though, a moderator of BladeForums.com. Accordingly, I do have influence over what happens on this site. Profanity is a no-no. Thus the edit.

As you will notice, only the swear word was replaced. The substance remains.

attention mr ron anderson , i was not having a go at you , if you took it that way i am sorry. i understand that you had to block my swearing.

Just a suggestion for a fellow West Aussie, buy your SOGS online from a reputable US dealer for half the price you pay here in Perth at Wellington Surplus and spend the money saved on getting some custom made sheaths that are more to your liking.

I have several fixed blades, the likes of Spyderco, Benchmade, Swamp Rat, Busse etc and they all came with sheaths that I felt ( stress, I felt ) didn't match the quality of the knives - Problem solved by getting new pants made for them, ones that suit my individual requirements.

BTW all, still haven't aquired my first SOG, but the Carbon Steel SOG S1 Bowie looks sweet and any knife using BG-42 has to be worth a look.

Just for interest Dealer price in England, Seal 2000 £134.95 ($236USD) and the Seal Pup £65.95 ($115USD).
So I'd like a good sheath with that!!!!
As I've already said, I have a Recondo, would have prefered a Bowie or 2000.

stockman , where in australia do you get your custom sheaths from? how can i import a double edge sog from the u.s.a ? itll never ger through customs. there is nothing i would love more then a custom leather back sheath for my pentagon

It was one of the reasons I got one, but can't say I'm impressed, because of the grind it's a pain to sharpen. I look at it as a 'should have been great' knife rather than a great knife.

Update, have managed to get an arm shaving sharp edge, but the sheath!! Who thought it would be a good idea to put the poppers on the back? They open when you draw the knife, plus the position is to high and it's to ridged to the body.
