Greetings to all in BladeForums!
Have only recently got into the world of knife collecting; also a former eagle scout and have always been able to find a use for a quality blade, be it a folder or fixed, but I find myself in a bit of a conundrum that hopefully Chris can help me untangle.
Recently found and purchased a SOG S2 Trident bowie on ebay for a certain amount that may or may not have been above what the knife is worth, depending on one bit of information;
The SOG S2 Trident could be 'special ordered' without the Navy SEAL engraving. The knife I purchased is one such example, however, a friend of mine who is an avid knife collector (but by his own admission, not of SOGs) said that such pieces without the SEAL logo were less desirable and thus, worth less.
My question to Chris is; "Exactly how many of these SOG S2 Tridents were 'special ordered' without the SEAL logo? Are there records showing/demonstrating that many people did NOT want the engraving? Are they more common than the S2 tridents that DID have the logo on them?"
The reason I ask this is because I simply had never seen one of the S2 tridents for sale that did NOT have the SEAL logo on it. ebay had 3-6 of them recently and all had that SEAL logo on them, whereas mine did not.
Regardless, I love the knife and the fact that it is a far more weather-proof design than either my Recon Bowie or my SCUBA/DEMO, but I do want to genuinely know if I bought a truly rare piece or if I simply wasn't knowledgeable enough to know the difference. (In which case, all I lost is a bit of money. Oh well, I've thrown away three figures on a sushi dinner before. ^_^)
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this little dilemma.
