Thanks very much for everyone's helpful advice!

I've narrowed my search down to these 2 knives.

I think the S42 is made of either 440A or AUS6. The S84 is made of the new (at least to me) BG-42 steel.

Do you guys think that the BG-42 is worth the price difference? It would cost me approx. $50. But amazon carries the S42 for $35 and I have a $30 gift certificate from the wife. :D

Which way would you guys go? I really like what I've read about BG-42, but will I notice enough of a difference over the S42 to justify the price difference?

Also, one interesting note, the SOG web page claims the S42 uses AUS6 (http://www.sogknives.com/outminac.htm), while the manual claims 440A on page 13. Anyone sure which it is?

Thanks very much everyone and have a good weekend! I've learned a ton just from reading old threads over the last few days.

I think I remember reading that SOG changed the description of it's steel, because American buyers had no idea what AUSx equated to in the old numeric designations. If I remember corectly, AUS6 is equivalent to 440A, AUS8=440C.

The "steel snobs" here will tell you that BG-42 is worth auctioning off your first born, but I think the 440/AUS will fit your needs just fine.

For more info, check out the SOG forum in the Manufacturer's section. I think Ron (the SOG rep) said he would be away for the holidays, but maybe some SOG fans there can help you out.
