SOG S60 Powerlock for $48.00... good deal?

I noticed that Costco is selling the SOG Model S-60 Powerlock for a price that seems downright reasonable.

I'm in the market for one and was wondering if anyone could comment on this model and if it's a 'good buy' or not?

Seems as though it may be a 'closeout' with upgraded model to be released (or already has been).

Sounds like a good deal to me. I bought mine from Lowes with a giftcard on a whim for 50-60 something. Very good, very well built tool.

The newer model is supposed to have piano key locks. Basically, they are suppose to cut down on tool clumping. Personally, the tool clumping has never been a big deal for me. I mean, you have to open the tool AND flip up the tool covers already. Whats the big deal having to press down a tool or two that comes up with the one you select? Piano locks nice to have? Probably. Worth waiting on or upgrading to? Meh..probably not.

I'm looking forward to the assisted opening version due out in the summer. That one I might splurge on if I have a little extra cash.

That's a reasonable price but after the non member surcharge and shipping, it's close to the regular price of the PowerLock at my local Lowes ($60).

In addition to the "piano key" locks, the new SOG has gear covers and a much improved wire cutter. If you cut a lot of wire, the improved wire cutter will be appreciated--its performance is close to that of a Klein cutter.

I went to the nearby Lowes and purchased the SOG S-62 MultiTool which appears to be the newer one that was mentioned in the thread.

The one I got did NOT have a scissor.

Are scissors supposed to come with this SOG model or is it 'optional'?

I thought the scissor component was an 'integral' part of any multi-tool.

Do people use their scissors often?

I kind of feel the S-62 is 'remiss' w/o the scissor.

What do folks think about the no scissor?

THis one has the V-cutter which I can't think of too many uses for other than cutting seatbelts.

There are lots of multi-tools without scissors (original SwissTool, SwissTool Spirit S, Charge ALX, Kick, etc.). I always carry a Classic SD (or a Rambler) on my keychain so having a scissor on a full size multi-tool isn't as important to me. The S60 and S61 might be a better choice if scissors are important to you. But one of the nice things about SOG multi-tools is that you can swap out the parts.

I modified my S60 added the sissors (a little tricky, actually, time consuming SOG will do it for $5. for you). I originally tried to keep all the standard issue tools, but could not get every thing in and still have it close tight. So I removed the 1/4" drive shaft and kept the cord/belt cutter. I felt that the chances of being any where near a 1/4" socket set when I need one was slim to nill, and if I was near it I would fire up the ratchet and not the SOG. By the way I ordered the scissors in Black (the 60 is chrome) and mounted them on the same handle as the knife blade, it helps me "find" the blade quicker.
Hope this helps. By the way, each of the vehicles (3) has an early LM, and I was carrying a Gerber 600 - the SOG is much beefer and stronger, a real tool.

Sog pretty damn good, but heavier than my spirit. Of course the size of the tool is 1.5 bigger too. Powerplay pt-540 has some great features but perfer the spirit due to weight and size. The best feature that I love is regular tools can replace broken tool on the powerplay. Simple hex bit and there you go.

Both Powerlocks that I got from Lowes (the first one is sunk in the Farmington River near the Simsbury/Avon line if anybody cares...) came with V-Cutters rather than scissors. The V-cutter is great for cutting zip-ties in tight places. But yeah, they come either with v-cutter or scissors- not both AFAIK.

$48 sounds like a good price for a new powerlock.

supratentorial: Do you know which models are upgrading to gear covers and piano locks. And when are the upgrades taking place?

I am looking at the S62/S63 or if i can get a good deal the S60 and add the v-cutter and probably remove the 1/4 drive tool. Thanks for any answer you can give me.

dmonay,

All of the S69 (or B69) PowerLocks will have the new features. If I recall correctly, the S69 is similar to the S63 except it has a C4 spike instead of a saw and 1/4 drive.

SOG started incorporating the new features in the other PowerLocks late last year. I've seen examples of several different upgraded PowerLocks on Ebay. If I were to guess, I'd say that most (if not all) of the newly manufactured PowerLocks will have the new features. But that's just a guess.

The difficulty is finding a seller that has one of the new ones. And I don't know of a seller to recommend. A majority of the ones on Ebay are the older models but you might keep a lookout for one to show up. Lowes would be the easiest since you can see what you're buying. There are lots of online merchants that show photos of the upgraded PowerLock but the photo might not be representative of what they have in stock. If you buy from an online merchant, I'd recommend that you make an inquiry by phone.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for all your help Jake. I called Rocky National and they seem to have the updated version according to the gal I spoke to there. They have a good price and free shipping. I'll probably order it today or tomorrow. It'l be a big brother to my Gerber 400 compact sport which I like because.....it's compact!
