hi all,
i have bought sog scuba demo 2 weeks ago. however when i have entered the website of sog knives, it is written there: if this knife is used as a diving knife the leather washer handle's longevity will greatly reduced. what does this mean? it is a great knife but i want to get some information about the leather washer handle. can't this knife's handle touch with water?
best wishes

The leather handle can TOUCH water but I would not recomend soaking it in water for an extended period of time like you would in a diving situation. Salt water is pretty corrisive and the stacked leather, although impregnated with epoxy, won't last very long. Its great for just about everything but dosn't shine around water.

Looks like its more of a collectors knife. Built rock solid, but if you want to dive one, buy two so one stays perfect. If you do dive it, clean it thoroughly and maintain the leather and it should be okay for a while.

Nice nife. Cool history.

I carry the Tigershark for diving but the Seal 2000 would be best due to the smaller blade surface. Get the Tigershark when you want it to use it for heavy duty chopping on land as well. If only for diving, go for the smaller Seal knife versions for less aquatic drag and greater underwater drawing convenience.
Any other knives like the Scuba Demo carry a great herritage. I would like to be able to afford one of those and yes, I would give it a salt water treatment but for testing purposes only. When diving keep it as functional as possible, having said that, don´t get small puny knives for diving, make sure you can cut anything as fast as possible when underwater. Consider blade design and drawing speed. Get the Seal 2000 for diving. If you need an all-purpose cutting blade, get the Tshark. If you can afford both, get both, it is as simple as that.

Spearfish, if you could only pick one for diving, which one out of the ones you mentioned would you choose ?

Also, just for fun, :D which one would you pick for out of water things ?

Hi Robbi,

For underwater, the Seal 2000, less drag, less drawing space.
On land, the Tshark.
Which ones do you prefer in water and on land?

That is so cool Rob! Great desinging there! Ok, yeah we operate in different pressure rangers but that knife is nice!!!

Spearfish, thank you, yes we do, I never get over my waist  , and the water is coooooold and crystal clear river water, no salt.

Is there many knife shops around where you live that carry SOG knives ?

It must really be nice to strap a SOG on and go diving. ;)

Robbie Roberson. :)

Hi Robbie

Out here in Spain there are many knife and sword shops but have not seen any SOGS yet. I order them from the States. But here they sell knives in gas stations, magazine stands, all over the place (very low quality in these places though but Tshark sizes unbelievable). I am sure they have top quality knife shops as well in the big cities but probably prices will be high for US knives, will keep you up to date when I have visited one, I live in a small coastal village. In Spain everyone is talking about Toledo steel, that´s the metal they are really proud of, is the same steel the medieval Spanish swords were made of. Great country for knife collectors. Having said that, there is a lot of hunting activity out here as well, I am sure the revolver would be greatly appreciated.
The local diving community is quite impressed with the Tshark. Too big for most divers but recently I found myself near a huge fishing net, I was happy to have the Tshark on my side, just in case anyone would get stuck in it, blade size does matter sometimes.

Greetings,
Spearfish

Spearfish, very interesting stories, I want to hear all about your diving experiences when you can. Keep us posted on the knife shops you may find where you live.

The handle comes with a water based finish. I find this a little odd that it is a reproduction of a diving knife.

dusty,

I myself would not at all hesitate to use the Scuba Demo in water, salt or otherwise. Just rinse it off with fresh water after using in the ocean.
My SOG BOwie and Recon Bowie knives have the same handle and I have not had any problems with them in water.
As oteyh says, just don´t leave it in water.
Also, you can put a leather conditioner on the handle, and even something like SnoSeal to help seal/waterproof the leather.

I have seen some old old old Kabar knives and their leather washer handles have survived lots of hard use in a water environment.

Cheers,

Carl
