Man, you should get a TV show with this title on foodnetwork or something. I'll see if I can contribute a pic at dinner tonight...

Pictures are always good, and for me, food tends to be my favorite backdrop.

Here's the Scuba Demo ready to go .... if you've never handled one of these, they are quite hefty and weighty.

I have a knife like this, new and unused. Bought it years ago and put it in the safe. What are they worth? I found prices between $300-600 on ebay. Is it a knife to hold onto or go ahead and use it?
Thanks, Nelson

Pricing ?? Heck, I'll give ya $100 right now to let you store it at my house for a few years .... LOL !!

I'm no collector, but I'd venture to say that if yours is mint in the box, such will bring top dollar. And hopefully a lot more than you paid for it. As we know, "worth" is that elusive quality only known to the buyer.

Cheers,

Carl

Very nice photo. If you don't mind I have two questions. Why is this model called "scuba/demo"? I presume the
"demo" is as in UDT and the design looks like a miitary dive knife but the handle material obviously wouldn't do.
As a side line I scuba dived for 20 years and all I had was a giant scubapro in the 70s and a skeletonized Buckmaster in the 80s.
And my other question is what is that on the plate? Is that an oyster?

Why the name ?? No idea.

On the plate: a slab of garlic-and-onion-chunk-encrusted cold roast beef, carved soon thereafter, reheated, and served for lunch with a fine California Cabernet.

Cheers,

Carl

OK thanks. I found a photo of a Vietnam era USN UDT (underwater demolition team) knife and that's what the scuba/demo replicates,
except for the original's rubber handle.
Gottcha on the plate.

So I could not find the box. Oh well. How durable is the handle? Is it ok to use a lot outdoors, get it wet etc?

Sorry, nope. The SOG product is a copy of the knife Ben Baker designed for guys in Naval Advisory Detachment (NAD), Da Nang RVN. Thirty eight of the knives were sent to NAD for issue to Oplan 34-Alpha in 1964. Thirty six were "lost" in operations. SOG put the "scuba/demo" on the blade for marketing purposes as the original knives were sterile.

So this knife was in addition to the "7" SOG Recon" and "6"SOG Bowie".
Got any links to photos of this NAD knife? Thanks.

Fantastic info. Thanks! So the scuba/demo never was a "dive knife" and had nothing to do with UDT.
The blade design comes from USN dive knives though, in sharp contrast to the SOG bowies.

drnls,

my SOG Bowie and Recon Bowie both have that similar stacked leather handle. I don't worry about using mine anywhere, in any weather conditions. If it ever gets that beat-up, I'll just remove the old leather washers and install new leather washers.

Cheers,

Carl

It was designed for waterborne ops but not a dive knife per say. Mostly the need for unattributable gear using similar construction techniques and materials as the other knives Ben contracted. Stainless steel was in its infancy back then so commercial offerings were limited. Being off the shelf they too would work for the purpose of a no attributable knife. The blade shape is copy of the Randall 18 or 14 with serrations. Whether Mr. Baker meant that, I don't know.
