I'm thinking of buying the SOG scuba/demo. For me, this knife looks like a beauty! Anyone has experience with SOG knives in general and this one particular? Is the serrated part on the back really sharp and can you use it for cutting rope i.e. or is it just decoration? How sharp are SOG's right out of the box?
Any idea why this knife is so expensive? ($310 on the SOG-site) I also saw on the SOG-site that this knife is on the normal product-list as on the discontinued product list. Is this knife going to be discontinued?

I posted a thread awhile back asking about it, I'll find it for you.

They are discontinued.

Culpeper is the guy to ask about the scuba/demo.

  1. It was originally designed as a diving blade so the serrated edge is designed for cutting rope and so forth.
  2. The blade is not scary sharp out of the box. But sharp. When sharpening these blades they also need to be honed as well to get a very sharp edge due to the large carbon material that needs to honed to get a nice sharp long lasting edge. AUS-8 is high in carbon and very hard. I have one that I narrowed down the tip on all sides and put it through an abuse test and the tip never bent.
  3. There are plenty of dealers on the auction site offering them about $30 dollars on average above general wholesale.
  4. For the time being this knife, an original SOG inspired design, has been discontinued by the powers.
  5. Do a search of this forum for more information. New Pig Hunter has a nice idea on how to treat the the leather handle and so forth. It is my favorite drop point fixed blade production knife.

My Scuba/Demo was surprisingly sharp right out of the box. It is a beautiful knife, in fact a female friend who usually wouldn't notice any knife referred to it as sexy. And, sexy it is. It is also a very well balanced and practical knife. However, even though it is captioned "scuba" you should be aware that the leather handle will not hold up well to water. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERE IS A KYDEX SHEATH AVAILABLE FOR THE SCUBA/DEMO?

The knife has been discontinued by SOG and I don't think they were ever packaged with anything other than leather sheaths.

I'm with DirkPitt. Mine actually was scary sharp out of the box, and I've used the serrations to cut rope, saw through small branches and saw the limbs off saw palmetto while wading through the back of beyond in Florida and not had any problems with it. It's a bit hefty for EDC and freaks out most city folks, but it's a great back woods blade. I'm disappointed that it's discontinued, glad I got ahold of one before that happened.

Lagarto.

It is my favorite production knife. It will hold an edge but you got to have some patience when sharpening it. It is the hardest stainless steel I've worked with. It is hard to get razor sharp. I also advise everyone to wash off the finish on the handle and treat it with Neats foot oil. Thanks New Pig Hunter.
