What do you think of the SOG Seal and Seal Pup for survival, camping, and/or hiking?

I don't own either myself, but if you do a search you'll find a lot of threads full of praise for these two. Both are worth the money.

I bought a SEAL when they first came out. I like the design and the sheath is better than most too, but damned if I could get a sharp edge on that knife. I ended up trading it away. Could be I had a bad one because most people like them.

I had the same problem with a SOG X42 that the wife bought for me. It didn't come sharp and it didn't leave sharp. I sent it to a friend, who sent it to his some in the mid east. I heard he swapped it for a Becker. :D

Thanks for the info. If the people here can't sharpen them, I'm not so sure that I could. How would they compare to a Becker Companion or Crewman Utility or Swamp Rat Howling Rat or Safari Skinner?

I'd get anything BK&T. Robust, solid blades, great value for the money.

That being said, anything Swamp Rat is going to be more durable. If it's in your budget, I'd go for 'em.

One thing that I like about the SOG is that I thought it would be great for canoeing and that I wouldn't have to worry about getting it all wet. I also like the new sheath with the notch out for cutting cord, line, etc.

Also, are the Swamp Rat's that much better than the Becker's?

If I recall correctly, our own Cliff Stamp was torture testing a BK&T and a Swamp Rat (don't recall the models, sorry), and they both held up well until he chopped each of them into a tree and tried to do a pull-up on 'em... The Becker snapped, the Swamp Rat didn't flinch.

.... Now, you can get two or three Beckers for the price of one SR, depending on the model... It's really up to you. You certainly won't be disappointed with the Beckers.

I would go with a Fallkniven in the price range of the SOGs. The A1 is an increadible knife for the money. Takes a beating, stays sharp, and is easy to put a hair-popping edge on when it needs it.

I have the Seal and the Government models, and have had no problems with them. Mine came sharp and and I touch them up with a Sydeco sharpener from time to time. I keep the seal in the car and the Gov in the BOB, just because the Seal is a bit heavy. I have carried it while camping but it was a shot trip and I wasn't carrying that mush gear with me.
