SOG SEAL Master

Hey, I can answer this one. :) In short, the SEAL Master is a SOG Tigershark sold through US Cavalry.

Tigershark History Lesson:
  • We issued the Tigershark about fourteen years ago as carbon steel (SK-5) knife with no serrations and a brushed finish. It was the fifth knife ever introduced by us.
  • About four years ago, we converted the knife to AUS6 stainless steel and added the gray powder coating.
  • About two or three years ago, through negotiations with US Cavalry, we added 3" of serrations to the most recent version of the Tigershark and sell it through US Cavalry with the name SEAL Master.
  • Around this time, SOG chose to include the Tigershark into the SEAL series and made it's configuration more similar to that of the SEAL Knife and the SEAL Pup. Accordingly, SOG converted SOG's Tigershark to the same configuration as the SEAL Master.
That brings us up to the most recent version.

For more information and exact stats on this knife, check out SOG's webpage for the Tigershark or please ask me.

Ok, I'm a little lost  Is there a new version of the Tigershark, or is the SOG SEAL Master simply the official name of the current model that a member of the SEAL Series?

Must be the lack of Starbucks today :)

Hey Dark,

No problem...it was probably my lack of a triple venti mocha today! :) (Or one of those Carmel Frappuccinos!! :p )

As of about 2-3 years ago, the SEAL Master being sold through US Cavalry and SOG's Tigershark are exactly the same knife. Zero difference. No changes to this product have taken place since.

That help?

Thanks :) Wanted to make sure I didn't have to hunt down another knife for my SEAL series, lol

Ah, Is there anything better than a triple venti mocha in the morning. My god, I thought I was the only one who got three shots, Almost two years at the same Starbucks, and they still ask me every morning if I'm sure I want three shots :D

Hi Ron,

I got a Tigershark about 3-4 years ago. It has a brushed finish and convex grind and it was supposed to be 440A, which is probably true. It may have been in the store for a long period of time before I bought it, so I don't know when it was actually produced. So my question is, did you make a stainless (440A or AUS6A) brushed finished version after the original SK-5, but before introducing the powdercoated one?

Hi Jan,

There is a bit of "gray" area about what happened, when, and in what order. If you asked me to guess about the steel of your knife, I'd say with relative surety (70-90% for sure) that if yours is NON-coated, it more than likely is carbon steel.

I can't remember which came first or if they happened at the same time. There might possibly be some in both ways (some carbon blades with a gray coating and some AUS6 without gray coating).

I know you'd likely wish a more definitive answer, but I could get into the whole thing about "putting in the change order" for changes in coating and steel type and them having a certain quantity already partially made, they may have had extra steel they had to use up first, there could have been some of both kinds in the same "lot," and so on…

That's the scoop as I know it...I hope this isn't too confusing, but I'm still groggy from just waking up. :)

Thanks Ron,

It's not as if my whole life and happiness depends on knowing the steel of this particular knife, so thank you for trying to clarify. Maybe i'll just try to put it in a bucket of salt water and see how it reacts:)

Regards Jan
