Hey there, I'm a Blade Forum lurker but I had a question I was hoping to get answered so I decided to pop my post cherry.
I recently switched my field knife from a Spyderco Fred Perrin to a SOG Seal Pup Elite. I just returned from a month long stay in the field and I really got to test out the Seal Pup Elite. I was actually very impressed with the knife itself, in fact I don't have a single complaint about the knife, the sheath on the other hand was disappointing.
When I bought the Seal Pup Elite I opted for the nylon sheath, mainly because it was MOLLE ready and has the little pocket on the front for a fire starter / field sharpener. The MOLLE compatibility was okay, it kept the sheath in place for sure but it had some major issues as well.
1. I carry my knife on my LBV upside down, the nylon sheath for the SPE allows the knife to slide out where about an inch of the bottom of the blade shows. Its retention strap has the velcro and the snap, but it still fails at truly retaining the knife. Obviously the sheath wasn't designed for inverted carry.
2. The horizontal loops on the reverse side of the sheath started tearing after only a month of every day wear. Luckily it has 4 of them, but still it didn't perform to my expectations.
Now really I've said all of that just to ask a couple of questions about the Kydex sheath, that appears to be the one I should have chosen in the first place.
TL;DR
1. Is the Kydex sheath MOLLE ready, or would it have to be tied to my LBV with 550 cord?
2. How well is the retention on the Kydex sheath? If positioned upside down on my chest will the knife slide down and reveal part of the blade just like the nylon sheath did?
3. How durable is the sheath? I think it's going for around $20 on Amazon which I believe to be a fair price for a quality sheath, but only if it's going to stand up to a month in the field every once in a while.
Anyone who has had similar experiences or has tested the Kydex sheath in a similar manner - I'd greatly appreciate your input!
Thanks.
