Welcome to blade forums. You may not be aware of the scrapyard and buss sale policy. Basically, they are made available in batches under certain time windows. If you don't order during the time window you can no longer get them from the company store. However, you may be able to find one on the secondary market usually at a higher cost than the original sale price.
Some people don't understand this and get frustrated when they try to buy a knife or older model that isn't available any longer. On the other hand, there is no doubt that scrapyard, swamprat and busse are premium knife makers. There is a reason why they can run the type of marketting model that they do where others cannot.
At this very moment, the scrapyard has a 5" blade for sale, the scrapper 5. It is thinner than usual for scrapyards at just under 3/16" thickness. It will likely be a classic. There is probably a couple of weeks left where it will still be available for order. Once the order is closed then you will be out of luck. If you do chose to order now, it will probably be about 6-8 weeks before the knife is made. Should you go this route, you will have one of the best tough knives that money can buy and receive it at a bargain price.
Or you can go for the Sog knife which is an adequate knife by a mid-range company. Your choice. Might I also tempt you to look at the fixed blades for sale under the Makers section. For $120-$140 you can have a wonderful custom fixed blade made by a premium maker. Here are a couple of names to look out for: DP-knives, Walter Davis, JK-knives, Koyote knives among others. Good luck on your choice.
Running a knife through a destruction test is not really the best way to determine performance under real conditions. I'll also invite you to check out the subforum Wilderness Survival Skills, where its frequent members like nothing more than to discuss about the scary situation you talked about.
Good luck on your choice!
