Hello, this is my first time on here, but I am not new to knives. I was just wondering what you guy's opinions are about the SOG Seal Pup Elite. Is it sturdy? Does the kydex/plastic sheath have good retention? Also, I would like to know if anybody has carried said knife as an EDC blade or if there is a knife. If you can think of any other 4-5 inch fixed blades for edc, I would appreciate it. Thanks beforehand!

Welcome to BladeForums! I'm going to move your thread to the General Knife Discussion sub forum. I thinks it's a better fit.

Welcome to the forum. I'm not a SOG fan so I'll refrain from comment on the Seal Pup. But it's interesting that you want to EDC a fixed blade. Can you tell us what you'll be using it for? That might produce better recommendations.

Personally if I were going to EDC a fixed it would probably be an ESEE or Becker.

I have a Seal Pup Elite (plain edge). I got it as soon as they were released at the Blade Show a number of years ago. I was pretty excited about SOG stuff then. It is a good knife. I don't know about as an EDC, but it's a great wood knife. Other ones you might consider are the Kabar Becker BK-17 or the BK-16. They are a pretty good value.

I like the knife. It's a great, handy, useful knife. You will find some folks not fans of SOG, and it's mostly just not a quality thing, it's just an opinion thing. Welcome to Bladeforums. Let you own liking guide you, and focus on quality, which the Seal Pup Elite is.

All that said, here's my concern with the knife, the black Kydex sheath and overall length will draw more attention depending on where you carry it. I have a great ZT knife very similar that I love to carry, but tend to do so when I'm in environments where knives aren't such a big deals: outdoors, hardware stores, auto parts places, etc. Packiong a nice mid sized knife with a Black Kydex sheath at the mall and folks not as comfy with the idea of a knife on your hip WILL give you looks. I have been that guy that gets the looks. I don't sweat it, but it bothers some folks.
I would consider a slighty shoter blade for EDC, like the Izula, The Becker BK11, or 14, of some of the great small custom blades guys here make. You can get some great 3" of so blades for a decent price.

Get the SOG if you like it. It is a great knife. But think carefully where you EDC it.

Welcom to the knife addiction site, AKA Bladeforums!

One of SOG's better designs for sure. AUS 8 isn't my favorite steal but it gets the job done. I found the nylon sheath to be trash, the molle straps tear away from the stitching easily.

When I was not "new to knives" I was asking the same questions about KaBar, Tops, and others. However new to knives is very subjective. Sog would be ok for the money, but not truly superb as far as knives go. My suggestion is to save longer and get a better knife down the road, you will be happier, own a better blade, and skip "several levels of not new to knives" that everyone of us has gone through on our quest of not being new to knives.

Where your money should go

Busse,
Swamp Rat,
Scrap Yard,
Survive Knives,
Blind Horse,
FallKniven,
Esee,
Bark River,
Becker,
or some of the many custom makers on the forum,

I do not mean to sound abrasive, but honestly do yourself a favor and research a lot, then get a high quality blade so you don't have to do all the trial and error most of us have done during the lifetime process of finding a great knife.

I had one for a number of years. I used it a lot, and I really liked it. For a lower grade steel, AUS-8 is my preference. I can't comment on the kydex sheath, but I actually liked the nylon one. I loved the design (and still do), and it was a nice size. I don't think you'd regret buying one. I'd still have mine, but I got to a point where I no longer liked serrated edges and decided to give away all of my knives that had them. I've considered buying a plain edge model on several occasions, and may still.

I have one, plain edge but haven't done anything with it. It seems like a good knife, but alive done is hold it. I do have a Becker BK2 that infused while camping. That is a lot of knife. Too much in some cases.

My intended use is for general utility as well as self-defense. I should have mentioned earlier but i would prefer it be full tang. I have looked into the Beckers such as the BK-11(Becker Necker). Although, I'm looking for a larger fixed blade to use as a primary. 3.75-5 inches would be perfect. Thanks for all of the recommendations and knowledge, I appreciate a good knife just as much as anyone.

Have you actually held a Sog pup elite? I was surprised at how thin the blade profile was in hand. To me, it didn't feel sturdy enough to put to outdoor use. I do however, like Sog and have owned a couple of their offerings.

welcome! a buddy gave me one for xmas last year and was my first sog. I assumed cause he's a mall ninja that the blade was gonna be crap but to my surprise its been great! held an edge quite well and in mho aus8 sharpens really easy. Its a bit aggressive for an edc but that all depends on where you take it and whos gonna see it. I don't think youd be disappointed for the $.

The blade stock is 3/16" that is on par with other outdoor knives, certainly thick enough.
