Hi folks,

I'm a newbie here to the forum -- my first post! I have a question about a Seal Pup that I just put on layaway. I wanted a general survival/utility knife for camping, fishing, etc.

The model I'm ordering is the M37, powder coated. After I got home from Cabelas, I saw that there is a SEAL Pup Elite, Black TiNi (E37T-N).

How much difference in quality -- if any -- is there between the powder-coated and the TiNi? If I decide to go with the E37T-N, it's only a $10 or $12 difference -- at least on Amazon -- so I'm not worried.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance,

Russ

If the difference in price is that minimal I'd go for the black coating. But just remember when it wears it will be more noticable than the powder coat. Some people like the black coating but end up being oc about it once the black starts wearing. If you're cool with that get the one you like most ;).

Get the newer one - black coated. It has a thicker blade and the black coating is less prone to collecting surface dirt than a powder coated one.

That being said, if you scuba dive get the powder coated M37 - it uses more rust resistant steel. The newer one should do well for most camping tasks and will not rust if sufficiently maintained.

Thanks guys. I will get the one with the black coating.

While I'm at it, I wanted to ask about how a knife like this is maintained. Should I keep a light coating of oil on it - like sewing machine oil, for example? What do you suggest?

It's a coated stainless steel blade, so unless you're subjecting it to very intense corrosive elements (i.e. saltwater) there's no need to oil it.

Just wipe it off after use and keep it dry.
