SOG Seal Pup or Short Ka-Bar?

My brother is on the SWAT team and he needs a solid fixed blade for his entry gear. I know that there are plenty of knives that would fill this roll, but knowing his taste I have narrowed my choices down to the Seal Pup or short Ka-bar. Of course if I got him the ka-bar, I would get the model that comes with the kydex sheath. I would like to know if the clip part of the blade on the seal pup is sharpened like on the ka-bar. I need opinions from you guys.

Hi MW :).., out of curiosity.., how did you narrow the field to those two knives for entry use on a SWAT Team?? You mentioned your brother's taste.., but I'm guessing we've got some guys on the Forum with better suggestions.., and folks that have also done the job.

Do you mean the false edge? If so, the answer is no.

"False Edge".., by definition..., is a sharpened portion of the blade, but it's correct that the Seal Pup does not have a sharpened swedge.

Well ExamonLyf if you must know, my brother specified a blade no more than 5" and something that costs less than $75. The only thing that this knife would be used for is a last resort weapon and his main concern is keeping his gear to a minimum. I have user experience with a full size ka-bar, but none with the smaller version or the seal pup, and if anyone does than i would love to hear there opinions on which is a better knife. Thank You;)

There is also the BM Nimravus, but that may be more than $75....would be lighter than the Ka-Bar.

I have this special fondness for Ka-Bar knives in my heart...they are so simple but so awesome and cool looking:p. I also love SOG knives...the SOG would probably be lighter. You could email Ka-Bar on the weight of the short.

Obviously I didn't have to know MW??? I may have misunderstood the intended use.., and was thinking along the lines of the Becker BK#3.., which is very popular with SWAT guys for entry type stuff. I've seen the Beckers for pretty darned close to your $75 target at Gun Shows (but the blade is 7" I believe)..., anyway good luck..., hope you find a good one in that price range.

Hey...

If you are looking for a backup or general use knife, then the Seal Pup for sure...

If a prybar is more up your alley then the K-bar is what you want...

The Seal pup makes a Great defensive knife or general cutter. Cutting the vale stems off tires, surgical removal of the whitewalls, or a backup has got Seal Pup written all over it..

will most likely need a knife that can double as a prybar. A softer knife with a very thick blade is good. Definitely forget the Kabar shorty... the blade is way too small and thin for any serious abuse.

You know I'm dying to ask the story behind those examples ... :)

If you're open to one more suggestion, take a look at the Buck Small Nighthawk. The blade is a little longer than you want (5-1/2"), but overall it is a stout knife with a good grip. Less than $40 at A.G. Russell. By the way, I have a Ka-bar shorty and like it, but I think the Buck is a little tougher, something your brother might appreciate.

Hey Ron...

LOL

One of my dealers is a door kicker for a certain PD's Tactical team.

I think he takes Great pleasure from disabling the bad guys car by cutting off the valve stems or taking out the whitewall..

I've even taken a valve stem or two in my time :D

Get him the SOG Seal Pup. I have one, and it's a stout little knife, and if he ever feels a need for a larger knife, he can get its' big-brother; The SOG Seal 2000, and have a GREAT pair.:).

My SEAL pup is the toughest little bastid of a knife I have ever met. I abused the living heck out of it whenever I get a chance. I have tried to break it through use to no avail. It is my beater-knife and it may not be pretty anymore but it is just as functional as day one.

I deleted a huge section of this post because I didnt want to sound like I was unduely bashing Kabars....so I'll just say this:

You couldnt pay me to take a mini-Kabar.:barf:
