SOG Seal Pup

To be honest, I had the SOG SEAL 2000 (larger version of the SEAL pup) and I wasn't really big on the handle ergonomics or edge geometry. I sold the SEAL 2000 and bought a SOG team leader which I find a far more useful and comfortable knife.

Depending on your application, there have also been good reviews on the SOG NorthWest Ranger and the SOG field pup. I generally use my SOG knives for an outdoor utility knife, backpacking and camping.

I have a SOG seal pup elite and I like it. It gets the job done. Ive even used it in the kitchen for cutting meat and opening boxes. I don't get too caught up in types of steel and brand names and because of it I am very happy with the knife. I would suggest the nylon sheath which is very well made and useful.

The Seal Pup is a very good knife. I put off for a long time buying one because of the " tactical" look to it but finally got one. After using it for a while I discovered I really like this knife. It's pretty strong with a very tough handle( full tang ,no stress risers). I don't mind the grip either considering it has finger grooves. I'd recommend the plain edge , satin finish , with nylon sheath. It just happens to be the cheaper of the options as well , but I like those options the best. The nylon sheath can be rigged horizontal , but I see difficulty doing it with the kydex. I can see the nylon lasting longer than the kydex as well. Once that backplate cracks or breaks , it's done. The short Kabar ( 5 1/4" blade ) sheaths fit it perfectly as well. I'd recommend getting it. The NWR is a good knife as well. I use both with no issues.:)

I'd recommend the newer model made in Taiwan instead of Japan. The steel is better (AUS-8A vs. AUS-6A) and the blade has more edge to it and not such a large ricasso area like the Japanese (AUS-6A) version.
